El 13 de octubre de 1938 se celebró en el Teatro-Circo Caupolicán de Santiago de Chile una gala benéfica en conmemoración del séptimo aniversario de la proclamación del la República Española. La intervención estelar estuvo a cargo del poeta Pablo Neruda, que había llegado de España en octubre del año anterior, y resultó particularmente impactante, según se relata en un folleto editado algunos días más tarde «al encuadrar, con la filmación de unos bombardeos sobre Madrid y Barcelona, sus impresiones personales, con una fuerza de emotividad tal que arrancó frases de dolor y rabia a la concurrencia». Las palabras y las imágenes conformaron un dramático espectáculo audiovisual. Setenta y cinco años más tarde, aún podemos sentir la intensidad retórica y emocional de aquel discurso. Recuperar la palabra de tantos escritores chilenos, de izquierdas y de derechas, que sintieron como suya la guerra civil española y que dejaron el testimonio de su conmoción en textos a menudo olvidados o perdidos en folletos, revistas y periódicos, ha sido uno de los objetivos de la larga investigación que culmina en este trabajo: miles de poemas, artículos, cuentos y crónicas de más de ciento cincuenta autores y once medios de comunicación documentados. El análisis de las trayectorias de tantos autores, muchos de ellos poco o nada conocidos, sirve también para esclarecer un momento apasionante y controvertido de las relaciones entre España y Chile.

De ningun pais de America Latina llegaron tantos voluntarios a la guerra civil como de Cuba; quiza en ninguno se viviera el conflicto espanol con tanta pasion, y en ninguno se ha mantenido tan viva la memoria de esa guerra como en Cuba. Este libro estudia el impacto de la contienda espanola en mas de ciento cincuenta escritores de la isla. Algunos eran intelectuales ya consagrados, que viajaron a Espana como periodistas o delegados al Congreso de Escritores Antifascistas. Otros eran diplomaticos que se convirtieron a la fuerza en testigos privilegiados de la guerra, responsabilizandose en la proteccion de ciudadanos cubanos y espanoles que buscaron refugio en la Embajada de Madrid. Otros -varios de ellos ya residentes en Espana- lucharon en defensa de la Republica y dejaron testimonio escrito de su participacion en el conflicto. Muchos mas respondieron desde la isla a las noticias que llegaban desde la Peninsula, tomando posicion ante la guerra mas mediatica que habia conocido la Historia mediante columnas periodisticas, ensayos de opinion, poemas y narraciones que destilaban fervor ideologico (a favor o en contra del fascismo, del comunismo), indignacion rabiosa (por la muerte de Lorca o las victimas de los bombardeos franquistas) y una carga profunda de solidaridad ante la tragedia. Este estudio da continuidad a los libros anteriores sobre Peru, Chile, Argentina y Ecuador."
