"There are never enough good stories for children." So has said Marjorie Agosin, the editor of this superb collection of mythological & historical tales. Rendered anew in Spanish by some of Chile's foremost writers, including Gabriela Mistral, Alicia Morel, Virginia Cruzat, Jacqueline Balcells & Maria Cristina de Fonseca & translated into flowing English by Celeste Kostopulos-Cooperman these stories speak of the most ancient of things with a contemporary voice: about the origin of the Araucan Race, & that of The Mapuches, the People of the Earth & about the origins of Chile itself. Marjorie Agosin is herself originally from Chile & is the author of the MOTHERS OF THE PLAZA DE MAYO, WOMEN OF SMOKE: LATIN AMERICAN WOMEN IN LITERATURE, & SCRAPS OF LIFE: CHILEAN ARPILLERAS, & several volumes of poetry as well. She is a Professor of Spanish Literature at Wellesley College near Boston. Her translator, Celeste Kostopolos-Cooperman is a Professor of Humanities & Modern Language at Suffolk University.

This collection of folktales provides readers with an extensive overview of the breadth of Tibetan culture, revealing the character of the region and its people as well as their traditional customs and values. Most Westerners are unlikely to travel to the mountainous region of East Asia and experience the Tibetan people and their culture directly. This book provides a way to experience and learn about this remote nation through carefully selected Tibetan folktales that provide readers with a unique glimpse into Tibet's culture, its people, and the land itself through the window of folklore. Providing a unique resource that can serve both as a storytime aid for educators who work with primary school students and a valuable reference for Eastern folklorists, Tibetan Folktales contains more than 30 traditional Tibetan stories that give readers a taste of the land, people, culture, history, religion, and psyche of this remote country. The tales are gathered from contemporary Tibetan storytellers and translated from written sources to represent the rich oral and written literary tradition of Tibet's culture. In addition, the book supplies tutorials for Tibetan crafts and games, a sample of recipes, and photographs and illustrations that create a multidimensional experience of Tibetan culture.

Mariana, a lonely old woman, lives in a hut by the sea-shore. The village children are afraid of her, though she wants to be their friend. One day a huge storm casts up a tiny Merbaby in a crab shell. Mariana loves and cares for the sea-child. She fears that its mother, a Sea Spirit, will think she has stolen it. But when the Sea Spirit comes, she thanks Mariana for saving her baby's life and asks her to look after the tiny girl until she learns to swim. Mariana's life changes: the village children love the mer-girl and discover that the old woman is their friend. Mariana knows that her beloved Merchild must return to live in the sea. When the day comes, however, she is no longer sad and lonely. The children comfort her, and the Merchild never forgets her. This poetic and lyrical re-telling of a Chilean folk-tale, first published in 2000, is now reissued in a gift format which does full justice to Jackie Morris's evocative illustrations.

Folktales Of Newfoundland Rle Folklore written by Herbert Halpert and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-20 with Social Science categories.

This collection of Newfoundland folk narratives, first published in 1996, grew out of extensive fieldwork in folk culture in the province. The intention was to collect as broad a spectrum of traditional material as possible, and Folktales of Newfoundland is notable not only for the number and quality of its narratives, but also for the format in which they are presented. A special transcription system conveys to the reader the accents and rhythms of each performance, and the endnote to each tale features an analysis of the narrator’s language. In addition, Newfoundland has preserved many aspects of English and Irish folk tradition, some of which are no longer active in the countries of their origin. Working from the premise that traditions virtually unknown in England might still survive in active form in Newfoundland, the researchers set out to discover if this was in fact the case.
