This is the first book devoted to chimera states - peculiar partial synchronization patterns in networks. Providing an overview of the state of the art in research on this topic, it explores how these hybrid states, which are composed of spatially separated domains of synchronized and desynchronized behavior, arise surprisingly in networks of identical units and symmetric coupling topologies. The book not only describes various types of chimeras, but also discusses the role of time delay, stochasticity, and network topology for these synchronization-desynchronization patterns. Moreover, it addresses the question of robustness and control of chimera states, which have various applications in physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering. This book is intended for researchers with a background in physics, applied mathematics, or engineering. Of great interest to specialists working on related problems, it is also a valuable resource for newcomers to the field and other scientists working on the control of spatio-temporal patterns.

On Coexistence Patterns written by Sindre W. Haugland and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-20 with Science categories.

This book is about coexistence patterns in ensembles of globally coupled nonlinear oscillators. Coexistence patterns in this respect are states of a dynamical system in which the dynamics in some parts of the system differ significantly from those in other parts, even though there is no underlying structural difference between the different parts. In other words, these asymmetric patterns emerge in a self-organized manner. As our main model, we use ensembles of various numbers of Stuart-Landau oscillators, all with the same natural frequency and all coupled equally strongly to each other. Employing computer simulations, bifurcation analysis and symmetry considerations, we uncover the mechanism behind a wide range of complex patterns found in these ensembles. Our starting point is the creation of so-called chimeras, which are subsequently treated within a new and broader context of related states.

Control Of Self Organizing Nonlinear Systems written by Eckehard Schöll and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-22 with Science categories.

The book summarizes the state-of-the-art of research on control of self-organizing nonlinear systems with contributions from leading international experts in the field. The first focus concerns recent methodological developments including control of networks and of noisy and time-delayed systems. As a second focus, the book features emerging concepts of application including control of quantum systems, soft condensed matter, and biological systems. Special topics reflecting the active research in the field are the analysis and control of chimera states in classical networks and in quantum systems, the mathematical treatment of multiscale systems, the control of colloidal and quantum transport, the control of epidemics and of neural network dynamics.

Delay Controlled Partial Synchronization In Complex Networks written by Jakub Sawicki and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-30 with Science categories.

The focus of this thesis are synchronization phenomena in networks and their intrinsic control through time delay, which is ubiquitous in real-world systems ranging from physics and acoustics to neuroscience and engineering. We encounter synchronization everywhere and it can be either a helpful or a detrimental mechanism. In the first part, after a survey of complex nonlinear systems and networks, we show that a seemingly simple system of two organ pipes gives birth to complex bifurcation and synchronization scenarios. Going from a 2-oscillator system to a ring of oscillators, we encounter the intriguing phenomenon of chimera states which are partial synchrony patterns with coexisting domains of synchronized and desynchronized dynamics. For more than a decade scientist have tried to solve the puzzle of this spontaneous symmetry-breaking emerging in networks of identical elements. We provide an analysis of initial conditions and extend our model by the addition of time delay and fractal connectivities. In the second part, we investigate partial synchronization patterns in a neuronal network and explain dynamical asymmetry arising from the hemispheric structure of the human brain. A particular focus is on the novel scenario of partial relay synchronization in multiplex networks. Such networks allow for synchronization of the coherent domains of chimera states via a remote layer, whereas the incoherent domains remain desynchronized. The theoretical framework is demonstrated with different generic models.

Over the past fifty years, the development of chaotic dynamical systems theory and its subsequent wide applicability in science and technology has been an extremely important achievement of modern mathematics. Chaotic attractors are not a fleeting curiosity, and their continued study is important for the progress of mathematics. This book collects several of the new relevant results on the most important of them: the Lozi, Hénon and Belykh attractors. Existence proofs for strange attractors in piecewise-smooth nonlinear Lozi-Hénon and Belykh maps are given. Generalization of Lozi map in higher dimensions, Markov partition or embedding into the 2D border collision normal form of this map are considered. K-symbol fractional order discrete-time and relationship between this map and maxtype difference equations are explored. Statistical self-similarity, control of chaotic transients, and target-oriented control of Hénon and Lozi attractors are presented. Controlling chimera and solitary states by additive noise in networks of chaotic maps, detecting invariant expanding cones for generating word sets to identify chaos in piecewise-linear maps, and studying border collision bifurcations in a piecewise linear duopoly model complete this book. This book is an essential companion for students and researchers in mathematics, physics, engineering, and related disciplines seeking to deepen their understanding of chaotic dynamical systems and their applications. The chapters in this book were originally published in Journal of Difference Equations and Applications.

Stochastic Systems With Time Delay written by Sarah A.M. Loos and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-18 with Mathematics categories.

The nonequilibrium behavior of nanoscopic and biological systems, which are typically strongly fluctuating, is a major focus of current research. Lately, much progress has been made in understanding such systems from a thermodynamic perspective. However, new theoretical challenges emerge when the fluctuating system is additionally subject to time delay, e.g. due to the presence of feedback loops. This thesis advances this young and vibrant research field in several directions. The first main contribution concerns the probabilistic description of time-delayed systems; e.g. by introducing a versatile approximation scheme for nonlinear delay systems. Second, it reveals that delay can induce intriguing thermodynamic properties such as anomalous (reversed) heat flow. More generally, the thesis shows how to treat the thermodynamics of non-Markovian systems by introducing auxiliary variables. It turns out that delayed feedback is inextricably linked to nonreciprocal coupling, information flow, and to net energy input on the fluctuating level.
