In creating five fictitious conversations between Xi Jinping and five European experts, David Baverez, who lives and works in Hong Kong, offers up a totally new vision of the relationship between China and Europe. The 20th century was one of intense exchanges between Europe and the USA. The 21st century will be marked by a similar relationship between the Old Continent and China. Throughout these pages, we see this possible new relationship emerging, encompassing economic and technological matters as well as issues relating to culture, history and society. This is a book that fills in the gaps with regard to what we know about China and steers us away from preconceived ideas. About the author David Baverez is a private investor. He has been based in Hong Kong since 2012, where he finances and advises various start-ups. Previously, he was a fund manager for 15 years, first at Fidelity Investments in London and Boston, then as the founding partner of KDA Capital, a European equity fund, until 2010. China and Europe: The Turning Point was first published in France in 2021 as Chine-Europe: le grand tournant (Le Passeur Éditeur). He is also the author of Beijing Express (Westphalia Press, 2017) and is a regular columnist for the French daily newspapers L'Opinion, and Les Echos, and for the weekly news magzazine L'Express.

Turn of the tide in China: "Zero Covid" leads to a relapse into self-imposed isolation and intensifies geopolitical tensions. The Chinese leadership soon considers itself the victor in the fight against the pandemic and the Western social system. Possibly prematurely, because at the same time it is risking its business model, which has been successful since Deng Xiaoping. Between facts and propaganda, the foreigners who remain in China experience how people settle into a country of contradictions. They observe how the country continues to progress in many respects, while repression and nationalism hark back to the days of Mao. At the same time, China mercilessly reminds the West of its own gaps between aspiration and reality. A snapshot with an open-ended outcome.

Chinesia written by Adrian Hsia and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-13 with Literary Criticism categories.

Our perception of the Others is based on our conception of ourselves. In theory the Others should be different. If necessary, we alter their images to accommodate the apperception of ourselves. Thus Chinesia, an amalgamation of facts and fiction, was created. In order to avoid previous repetition of stereotypes and prejudices, the present study re-examines the parameters which created Chinesia and traces its development to the end of the 18th century. It discusses the reports of the European seafarers and trade embassies to China and analyzes the situation of the Jesuit missionaries and their European publications on China. These helped to develop a wondrous China during Baroque and early Enlightenment which, however, gradually became offensive to Christian pride. After Christian Wolff was dismissed from the University of Halle and banished from Prussia for eulogizing Confucianism, China was steadily downgraded, particularly by the historicists who were re-evaluating the position of Europe in World History. The white race was perceived as superior to all other races (David Hume and Kant); consequently, the complexion of the Chinese became increasingly yellower. It darkened from the Meerschaum hue (Lichtenberg) to the color of dried orange peels (Gobineau) toward the end of the 19th century. Finally, the Chinese were considered to be too stupid to have created the Chinese culture. The literary works of these periods reflect this development. The literary study begins with the analysis of European dramatization of the Manchu Conquest of China and its subsequent fictional Christianization. Then the Jesuit plays with Chinese themes are discussed, for the first time in literary history. Also analyzed is the reception of the Chinese Orphan motive in European literature which was the turning point in downgrading China, and subsequently Montesquieu's impact on Albrecht von Haller's novel "Usong" is examined. Thereafter, the study scrutinizes the contradictory positions of Herder and von Seckendorff (or Goethe, for that matter) in Weimar. The book concludes with a concise analysis of the 'eschatological sinism' of Hegel, Marx and Weber to indicate the development of the later centuries.
