This book is the first anthology compiled in English by the CEIBS Case Center to promote China-focused cases worldwide. Included are ten of twenty six award-winning cases from the Global Contest for the Best China-Focused Cases during 2015 to 2017: these works exemplify the quality of effective business cases and share stories of China to the world. Each of the ten cases has a defining feature. Some cases, with a focus on user demand, analyze how companies build their core competence (e.g., Haidilao Hot-Pot and OnePlus Mobile Phone), while others present an array of business innovations in the era of new retail, e-commerce, and the sharing economy (e.g., SF Express, Jinhuobao, ofo, FamilyMart, and Handu Apparel). Some describe Chinese companies’ operations in the overseas market (e.g., Huawei and TECNO), and others depict how foreign companies adapt to the Chinese market in a unique way (e.g., Starbucks). These cases were drawn from Chinese and overseas business schools. The book helps bridge the gap between the world management community’s interest in China and the limited availability of China-focused management cases. This book scrutinizes the frequently ignored agency of Global South sub-national actors in their interactions with China, using a multidisciplinary approach and eleven case studies. Contributors examine China’s presence in the Global South on a country-by-country basis, analyzing how various non-state and sub-state actors are responding to the rise of China and whether they are attracted by the cooperation models that China proposes or deterred by its new assertiveness. Contributions cover diverse and heterogeneous geographies of the Global South, ranging from Papua-New Guinea to Argentina and from Madagascar to the Russian Far East. Examining such diverse cases, contributors focus on two interrelated questions: What is the actual economic, political, and social impact of China’s growing presence in the Global South? This book examines state-state relations and new forms of state business relations that have emerged with an increase in China’s foreign direct investments in Malaysia. Focusing on investments in the industrial sector and through in-depth case studies, this book adopts a novel framework to analyse these different types of state-business relations. These new forms of state-business relations are created from the different modes of negotiations between different key actors in each of the cases. Diverse outcomes were found, reflecting the disparate forms of power relationships and state cohesiveness with unique institutional architectures formed in each case. The book identifies a major shift in structural power in these new forms of state-business relations as China’s large multinational state-owned enterprises increasingly invest in Malaysia.
