Translated from the original French publication, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of 20th century Chinese literature and examines the relationship between Chinese literary theory and modernity. The author surveys the work of leading writers including Zhang Ailing, Beidao, and Mu Dan. The author seeks to answer some fundamental questions in the study of Chinese literary history, such as: How does contemporary Chinese literature go from historical narrative to the narrative of the I, where rhythm and epic merge into writing, and where the instinctive load of the rhythm substantiates the epic? What are the steps and the forms of mediation that allow such a transition? Is the subject the only agent of the transition? What is its status? What is the role of poetic language that led to the birth of the subject and which separates it from empiricism? What are the difficulties faced by Chinese writers today? Young Chinese writers set off in search of a totally new writing to rediscover subjectivity, which is in no way limited to literature; it also covers areas such as the law, and the expression of the I confronted to an overpowering we.

Song of Youth (青春之歌), first published in 1958, is a semi-autobiographical novel written by Yang Mo (杨沫), a contemporary Chinese writer. The novel is based on Yang Mo's personal experiences and touches numerous social issues that occurred during the Japanese invasion of China in the 1930s. Song of Youth has a vivid plot and truly touching characters. With the student movement as the background, through the growth story of the main character, Lin Daojing (林道静), a classic narrative of revolutionary history is constructed. Lin Daojing is a high school student in Beiping (北平, former name of Beijing). She was born in a rich family of property owners. Her father was the president of the university and her biological mother (daughter of a farmer) died early. Daojing grew up under the cold eyes of her adoptive mother Xu Fengying (徐凤英) and tasted the bitterness of lovelessness. Before Daojing could even graduate from the high school, her father fled away with a concubine. Subsequently, Daojing's adoptive mother tried forcing her to marry Beiping Public Security Director (北平公安局长) Hu Meng'an (胡梦安). Daojing refused to follow, and had no choice but to run away from home. So Daojing left overnight. When Daojing left home, her luggage had nothing but musical instruments. People looked at the girl with this strange student appearance. Later, Dao Jing was arrested and imprisoned. She was tortured in prison. Finally, what happened to Daojing? Had she ever enjoyed a peaceful life? Read on... This novel is an excellent achievement in the works of students and intellectuals, and provides great educational values. The book has 10 chapters in the following order: Chapter 1: Lin Daojing was forced to jump into the sea (第一章:林道静被逼跳海) Chapter 2: Lin Daojing and Yu Yongze (第二章:林道静和余永泽的爱情生活) Chapter 3: Lin Daojing and the revolution (第三章:林道静开始接触革命) Chapter 4: Lin Daojing participates in the parade (第四章:林道静参加游行活动) Chapter 5: Lu Jiachuan was killed in prison (第五章:卢嘉川狱中被害) Chapter 6: Lin Daojing and Yu Yongze parting ways (第六章:林道静和余永泽分道扬镳) Chapter 7: Lin Daojing was arrested (第七章:林道静被捕而后逃跑) Chapter 8: Lin Daojing's Revolutionary Movement in Dingxian (第八章:林道静在定县的革命运动) Chapter 9: Education in prison (第九章:监狱中的教育) Chapter 10: Formally becoming a Communist (第十章:正式成为一名共产党员) The current book volume, China's Great Contemporary Literature 3, is a Level 5 Chinese reading practice book. "... an important contribution to the study of recent Chinese literature." -- Choice "This fine, scholarly survey of Chinese literature since 1949... discusses such trends as modernism, nativism, realism, root-seeking and 'scar' literature, 'misty' poets, and political, feminist, and societal issues in modern Chinese literature." -- Library Journal This volume is a survey of modern Chinese literature in the second half of the twentieth century. It has three goals: (1) to introduce figures, works, movements, and debates that constitute the dynamics of Chinese literature from 1949 to the end of the century; (2) to depict the enunciative endeavors, ranging from ideological treatises to avant-garde experiments, that inform the polyphonic discourse of Chinese cultural politics; (3) to observe the historical factors that enacted the interplay of literary (post)modernities across the Chinese communities in the Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and overseas.

What do the Chinese literature and film inspired by the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) have in common with the Chinese literature and film of the May Fourth movement (1918-1930)? This new book demonstrates that these two periods of the highest literary and cinematic creativity in twentieth-century China share several aims: to liberate these narrative arts from previous aesthetic orthodoxies, to draw on foreign sources for inspiration, and to free individuals from social conformity. Although these consistencies seem readily apparent, with a sharper focus the distinguished contributors to this volume reveal that in many ways discontinuity, not continuity, prevails. Their analysis illuminates the powerful meeting place of language, imagery, and narrative with politics, history, and ideology in twentieth-century China. Drawing on a wide range of methodologies, from formal analysis to feminist criticism, from deconstruction to cultural critique, the authors demonstrate that the scholarship of modern Chinese literature and film has become integral to contemporary critical discourse. They respond to Eurocentric theories, but their ultimate concern is literature and film in China's unique historical context. The volume illustrates three general issues preoccupying this century's scholars: the conflict of the rural search for roots and the native soil movement versus the new strains of urban exoticism; the diacritics of voice, narrative mode, and intertextuality; and the reintroduction of issues surrounding gender and subjectivity. In the years since the death of Mao Zedong, interest in Chinese writers and Chinese literature has risen significantly in the West. In 2000, Gao Xingjian became the first Chinese writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature followed by Mo Yan in 2012, and writers such as Ha Jin and Da Sijie have also become well known in the West. Despite this progress, the vast majority of Chinese writers remain largely unknown outside of China. This book introduces the lives and works of eighty contemporary Chinese writers, and focuses on writers from the "Rightist" generation (Bai Hua, Gao Xiaosheng, Liu Shaotang), writers of the Red Guard generation (Li Rui, Wang Anyi), Post-Cultural Revolution Writers, as well as others. Unlike earlier works, it provides detailed, often first-hand, biographical information on this wide range of writers, including their career trajectories, major themes and artistic characteristics. In addition to this, each entry includes a critical presentation and evaluation of the writer’s major works, a selected bibliography of publications that includes works in Chinese, works translated into English, and critical articles and books available in English. Offering a valuable contribution to the field of contemporary Chinese literature by making detailed information about Chinese writers more accessible, this book will be of interest to students and scholars Chinese Literature, Contemporary Literature and Chinese Studies.
