Excerpt from China's Millions: North American Edition, Illustrated, 1920 Bading recently the biography Of a saintly 'and gifted man, the following extract from one of his letters deeply impressed me: It is as if people were so afraid of intolerance that they are beginning to have no convictions at all. This was written in 1911, and it is even more true to-day than then. The precious chapter on that greatest of gifts, love, is made to cover a multitude of sins in a way the Apostle never intended, so that it serves to hide things that would have called forth his righteous indignation. World conformity, . Carnal policy, a perverted Gospel, may all be excused, the only thing for which no excuse can be found being outspoken faithfulness to the truth of God. But if silence in the face of these things is love, then neither the Lord Himself, nor Paul, nor John, had any of it, for they not only proclaimed the truth but sternly rebuked error and those who held and taught it. Possibly some earnest men have forgotten that opposers are to be instructed in the spirit of meek ness, 'but, still, destructive heresies are not to be overturned by honeyed words, nor are false prophets to be silenced by polite tributes to their earnestness and ability. If a Gospel is preached that ignores the need of regeneration, that sees in the cross of Christ nothing more than an example Of sacrifice, and that makes salvation a mere matter Of personal effort with perhaps some little help from God, it is what the Holy Spirit by the mouth of Paul called another Gospel, concerning which he said, But though we or an angel from heaven, should preach to' you any Gospel other than that which we preached to you, let him be anathema! Excerpt from China's Millions, 1888 Months of earnest prayer resulted In a deep conviction' that a Special agency was essential for the evangelisation of Inland China; and that, by simple trust in god, such an agency might be raised up and sustained without interfering injuriously with any existing work. I had an equally deep conviction that god would have me to seek from Him the needed workers, and to go forth with them. But for a long time unbelief hindered my taking the first step. How inconsistent unbelief always 15. L I had no doubt that, if I prayed for workers, in the Name of the lord jesus christ, they would be given me. I had no doubt that, in answer to Such prayer, the means for our going forth would be provided, and that doors would be opened before us in unreached parts Of the Empire. But I had not then learned to trust god for keeping power and grace for myself, so no wonder that I could not trust Him to keep others who might be prepared to go with me. I feared that in the midst of the dangers, difficulties, and trials which would necessarily be connected with such a work, some who were comparatively inexperienced Christians might break down, and bitterly reproach me for having encouraged them to undertake an enterprise for which they were unequal.
