This book analyzes the mindset with which China enters into negotiations, and applies these insights into contemporary arenas of Chinese activity around the world. The volume presents and analyses the historical and cultural foundations of Chinese thinking as used in the practice of present-day negotiation. It begins by addressing the essence of Chinese negotiations and the Chinese mindset, turning to a section that presents the cultural foundations of that mindset and strategy. The concepts of Confucianism, Taoism, Yin-Yang, and Chinese military strategy are highlighted. The cases of the Belt-and-Road Initiative and the South and East China Seas are examined to show the application of these concepts, with one addressing business and economic negotiations and the other examining cases of negotiation in geopolitics. Finally, a synthesis of what has been learned is presented, which will contribute to negotiation theory and ultimately will help Western practitioners contemplating negotiation with Chinese diplomats and businesses, as well as being a basis for policy analysts’ understanding of Chinese practices in international relations. This book will be of much interest to students of international negotiation, foreign policy, business studies, and international relations, as well as practitioners and policymakers.

No major enterprise or financial institution can avoid doing business with China -- if not directly, then through myriad hidden connections. Global businesses either use Chinese resources or sell to and in China or compete with companies that do. Because there's no avoiding China, business leaders need a framework that orders the different (and seemingly contradictory) streams of data that hint at its future. That framework is The China Strategy. In this invaluable book, Edward Tse explains the ever-changing nature of China's business environment, its increasingly complex relationship with the rest of the world, and the global business implications -- not just for our current environment but for the next decade. Change, Tse argues, is taking place in non-linearly. Some dimensions (like Chinese entrepreneurship) are expanding exponentially, while others (like the value of China's labor arbitrage) may be reaching a plateau. Eschewing easy explanations, Tse shows how to build and execute a global business strategy in light of these changes, offering practical advice amidst a sea of simple books that offer too-quick solutions. In a world in which a successful business strategy means a successful China strategy, this book is uniquely positioned to help business leaders navigate the &"country that cannot be ignored."

Chinese Business Negotiation offers readers a comprehensive insight into Chinese negotiation principles, shaped by centuries of cultural tradition and contemporary global business dynamics. Unlike competitive or zero-sum approaches, Chinese negotiation emphasizes harmony, trust, and long-term partnerships. This book introduces key concepts such as Shi (strategic advantage through interdependence), ethical wealth-seeking, and human-centered, empathy-driven communication. Structured across nine chapters, the book blends historical wisdom with modern business applications, providing practical frameworks for navigating cross-cultural negotiations. Readers will gain an understanding of strategic planning, flexible adaptation, and balanced communication in high-stakes deal-making. Case studies—including Lenovo’s acquisition of IBM’s PC division, SANY’s acquisition of Germany’s Putzmeister, Midea’s acquisition of KUKA Robotics, and Tesla’s negotiations in China—illustrate how these principles drive success in real-world scenarios. This book serves as a valuable resource for business professionals, scholars, and policymakers seeking to deepen their understanding of Chinese negotiation culture. By bridging Eastern and Western approaches, it equips readers with the tools to foster cooperative, mutually beneficial agreements in an increasingly interconnected world.

After two decades of hostile confrontation, China and the United States initiated negotiations in the early 1970s to normalize relations. Senior officials of the Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan administrations had little experience dealing with the Chinese, but they soon learned that their counterparts from the People's Republic were skilled negotiators. This study of Chinese negotiating behavior explores the ways senior officials of the PRC--Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, and others--managed these high-level political negotiations with their new American "old friends." It follows the negotiating process step by step, and concludes with guidelines for dealing with Chinese officials. Originally written for the RAND Corporation, this study was classified because it drew on the official negotiating record. It was subsequently declassified, and RAND published the study in 1995. For this edition, Solomon has added a new introduction, and Chas Freeman has written an interpretive essay describing the ways in which Chinese negotiating behavior has, and has not, changed since the original study. The bibiliography has been updated as well.

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of Russia's foreign policy in gray zone conflicts, with a particular focus on its interventions in Ukraine. Challenging conventional views, the book contends that Russia's use of varied gray zone tactics is influenced by both system-level incentives and domestic-level opportunities, which are integrated here into the Incentive-Opportunity Intervention (IOI) Model. The book examines case studies including Abkhazia, Crimea, Odesa, Kharkiv, and the Donbas, demonstrating how local ethnic-based movements and perceptions of regional retreat shape Moscow's coercive strategies. It highlights the reactive nature of Russia's tactics, driven by perceived threats to its protector role, and the significant role of ethnic and political dynamics in the region. The study underscores the importance of understanding these motivations for effective conflict resolution and suggests that protecting minority rights could mitigate such interventions. Policy recommendations emphasize the need for nuanced approaches that address both geopolitical and local dynamics. Ultimately, the book calls for future research to apply the IOI Model to other great powers, enhance the generalizability and applicability of the findings, and highlight the potential for multilateral coordination in promoting minority rights as a strategy for conflict prevention. This book will be of much interest to students and policy practitioners working on Russian foreign policy, international security, Eastern European politics, and International Relations
