It is the early nineteenth century. The British East India Company has been bringing in Chinese slaves to work in the tea gardens of Assam. Amidst days of misery and toil, they slowly begin to find contentment in their day-to-day lives. In post-independence Assam, Mei Lin, descended from the slave Ho Han, lives a life of satisfaction with her husband Pulok Barua. But in 1962, as war breaks out in the high Himalayas between India and China, a close family member conspires to have Mei Lin deported to Maoist China. She and thousands of other Chinese Indians will now have to fend for themselves in a land that, despite their origins, is strangely foreign. From the horror-ridden hardships of the slave pens of Assam to the Sino-Indian war, this searing novel tells the story of the Chinese Indians, a community condemned by intolerance to obscurity and untold sorrow.

Growing Up In San Francisco S Chinatown written by Edmund S Wong and has been published by Arcadia Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-04 with History categories.

Chinese American baby boomers who grew up within the twenty-nine square blocks of San Francisco's Chinatown lived in two worlds. Elders implored the younger generation to retain ties with old China even as the youth felt the pull of a future sheathed in red, white and blue. The family-owned shops, favorite siu-yeh (snack) joints and the gai-chongs where mothers labored as low-wage seamstresses contrasted with the allure of Disney, new cars and football. It was a childhood immersed in two vibrant cultures and languages, shaped by both. Author Edmund S. Wong brings to life Chinatown's heart and soul from its golden age.

Nathan, a professor at McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, is a happily married father of two. He has a wide range of interests, including Western classical music, foreign languages, water sports and he is a connoisseur of wines. In all, he is a person living his life to the fullest. Shortly after he loses his wife and children in an accident, Nathan unexpectedly connects to his past, with two women who had conceived through his sperm donation while he was still a financially struggling student. Nathan undertakes to bring up the two teenagers, making up for the tragic loss of his own. Meanwhile, Brenda, his former favorite student at UT, steps into Nathan’s life as his lover. The sudden entry of multi-racial, multi-religious characters into the environment of this aspiring Nobel Laureate is of course not devoid of far-reaching consequences. Karma turns Nathan's life upside down and Austin Colors, quite contrary to the pleasant feelings the title evokes, becomes somewhat of a Greek tragedy.
