Through hundreds of conversations with foreign students who were experiencing difficulty in learning the Chinese language, I realized that they were often slowed down because they did not perceive certain fundamental bases of this ancient language of more than 4,000 years. It is with the desire to highlight these fundamental bases, and with the wish to help students learn the Chinese language, that I undertook to write “Chinese Without Tears, the fundamentals of the Chinese language.”If today you were told: “With this book, you will learn the fundamentals of the Chinese language. Following, you will understand and read aloud a complete short story written in Chinese, story that you will translate into English, and finally re-write in Chinese”, would you believe it?Step by step, this book shows that although mastering the Chinese language may take a lifetime, an understanding of the basics can be grasped in a relatively short time, laying the groundwork for subsequent serious studies.

Chinese Without Tears, Intermediate Level follows the story of an overseas student, Emily, through the course of her life in China. Her story is told through a series of 17 dialogues that become progressively sophisticated and challenging from one lesson to the next. The dialogues show scenarios anyone is likely to encounter when coming to China for the first time, whether to study, to work, or to visit. Each dialogue is accompanied by detailed instructional notes on grammar and usage. Additional informational notes also make each lesson a beginner's guide to a single topic, like banking, shopping, dining, commuting and making reservations. Supplementary vocabulary and facts help learners go beyond the dialogues to manage daily situations in greater depth and talk about common topics with greater flexibility. Chinese Without Tears, Intermediate Level is the second volume of the Chinese Without Tears series. It is recommended for intermediate beginners; either those who have studied Chinese Without Tears for Beginners or with one semester's study in Mandarin Chinese program or those with equivalent experience (in part-time courses or through self-study). Both a thorough knowledge of Pinyin and a rudimentary knowledge of Chinese characters are recommended for learners studying this textbook. Chinese Without Tears, Intermediate Level includes the following features: Vocabulary listings that break down new terms into their smallest meaningful units. Detailed notes on word usage that use simple, direct language. Tips that link the language to the culture. Various exercises that reinforce and test target skills. Notes that help learners distinguish between commonly confused words. Grammar notes that help learners avoid commonly made mistakes. Supplementary sections that provide the information necessary to in-depth discussions. Dialogues that can be heard anywhere in today's China. Chinese Without Tears, Intermediate Level is the second volume of the Chinese Without Tears series. This volume was compiled by Shenzhen University's College of International Exchange. The Chinese text was written by associate professor Liu Huijun, who has over 20 years' experience teaching Mandarin Chinese to speakers of other languages. The English translation was written by Jared Scott Pratt, who taught English at a US University before coming to China in 2006.

Chinese American Literature Without Borders written by King-Kok Cheung and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-02-18 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book bridges comparative literature and American studies by using an intercultural and bilingual approach to Chinese American literature. King-Kok Cheung launches a new transnational exchange by examining both Chinese and Chinese American writers. Part 1 presents alternative forms of masculinity that transcend conventional associations of valor with aggression. It examines gender refashioning in light of the Chinese dyadic ideal of wen-wu (verbal arts and martial arts), while redefining both in the process. Part 2 highlights the writers’ formal innovations by presenting alternative autobiography, theory, metafiction, and translation. In doing so, Cheung puts in relief the literary experiments of the writers, who interweave hybrid poetics with two-pronged geopolitical critiques. The writers examined provide a reflexive lens through which transpacific audiences are beckoned to view the “other” country and to look homeward without blinders.

International comparative studies of student achievement have caught the attention of governments, policy-makers, school leaders and educational researchers globally. They have become benchmarks of education for countries in the world and provide a broad perspective for countries to evaluate their education achievement. However, culture and school environment are two critical factors affecting educational achievement that deserve careful consideration and re-interpretation. This book brings light to these conceptual and methodological issues. The 14 articles in this book deal with various aspects of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), including cultural and social environments, principals' roles and views, achievements in Reading, Science, and Mathematics, and the trustworthiness of international comparisons. The articles use PISA and PIRLS data to present new insights and interpretations of international surveys. These insights will help educators, administrators, and policy-makers understand the working mechanisms of their school systems and the relationships between students' achievement and the culture and school environment they are in.This book is a companion volume to the author's earlier publication — PISA: Issues and Effects in Singapore, East Asia, and the World (World Scientific, 2017).

This book deals with teachers' behaviors that promote the creativity of students. It includes a rating scale for measuring a teacher's creativity fostering behavior — a scale known as the CFTIndex — and a series of conceptualization and research papers, including a lead article by Professor Authur Cropley, whose original ideas served as the basis of the CFTIndex. The other papers in this volume are by international authors who have used the scale in their research and who can now share their experiences using it in this volume. There is a dearth of measuring instruments that cover teacher behaviors where creativity is concerned, but the CFTIndex fills this vacuum, as evidenced by the many articles using this index in the international arena of creativity research.
