"Nazi Germany's defeat in May 1945 commenced a decade-long allied effort to democratize the former Reich. The United States simultaneously began sheltering scientists, industrialists, and military officers complicit in Nazi crimes. What explained this conflict between the spirit and practice of denazification? Did U.S. Cold War anticommunism simply replace antifascism in the postwar period? Did Americans favor rightists over leftists in a quest to restore "order" in Europe?" De la vie et de l'œuvre du Général de Gaulle, la période du Rassemblement du peuple français - de son lancement à Strasbourg, en 1947, à sa mise en sommeil en 1955 - est la moins connue. Comment est né le RPF ? A-t-il été créé trop tôt ou trop tard ? Était-il un parti politique comme les autres ? Quels étaient ses objectifs politiques et sociaux ? Quelles furent ses relations avec les autres partis, les intellectuels, les médias ? Il ressort, de ce tour d'horizon très complet que, si le RPF a en partie échoué - puisque le régime de la IVe République a tenu bon - il a réussi à former un personnel politique et un encadrement, dont le rôle fut décisif au moment du retour du Général de Gaulle en 1958.
