This study concerns the earliest English literature encouraging women not to marry, the Katherine Group. It is a set of five early thirteenth-century devotional texts, a sermon called "Hali Meidhad" ("Holy Virginity"), the lives of three early Christian virgin martyrs, Katherine, Margaret, and Juliana, and an allegory "Sawles Warde" ("Care of the Soul"). All of the texts celebrate virginity, but they do so in a novel way. Unlike other virginity literature, which focuses on the sacred benefits that come to women who do not marry, these texts argue that marriage harms women, and they focus on the material advantages of not marrying. They are profoundly non-mystical, articulating the values of self-sufficiency and self determination. Placing the Katherine Group within the male clerical tradition of Jerome and Peter Abelard, a tradition whose concerns about marriage and domesticity have not been much appreciated before, the author shows how the texts of the Katherine Group operate not as part of a female mystical tradition, but within the male clerical tradition of anti-matrimonial literature.

Marry Him written by Lori Gottlieb and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-02-04 with Family & Relationships categories.

An eye-opening, funny, painful, and always truthful in-depth examination of modern relationships and a wake-up call for single women about getting real about Mr. Right. You have a fulfilling job, great friends, and the perfect apartment. So what if you haven’t found “The One” just yet. He’ll come along someday, right? But what if he doesn’t? Or what if Mr. Right had been, well, Mr. Right in Front of You—but you passed him by? Nearing forty and still single, journalist Lori Gottlieb started to wonder: What makes for lasting romantic fulfillment, and are we looking for those qualities when we’re dating? Are we too picky about trivial things that don’t matter, and not picky enough about the often overlooked things that do? In Marry Him, Gottlieb explores an all-too-common dilemma—how to reconcile the desire for a happy marriage with a list of must-haves and deal-breakers so long and complicated that many great guys get misguidedly eliminated. On a quest to find the answer, Gottlieb sets out on her own journey in search of love, discovering wisdom and surprising insights from sociologists and neurobiologists, marital researchers and behavioral economists—as well as single and married men and women of all generations.

Along the way, she lived with an indigenous Mayan community in Guatemala, hiked alone in the Ecuadorian Andes, got mugged in Costa Rica, swam across the border from Costa Rica to Panama, slept under a meteor shower in the cracked salt desert of Gujarat and learnt to conquer her deepest fears. With its vivid descriptions, cinematic landscapes, moving encounters and uplifting adventures, The Shooting Star is a travel memoir that maps not just the world but the human spirit.

Spinster written by Kate Bolick and has been published by Crown this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-21 with Social Science categories.

A New York Times Book Review Notable Book “Whom to marry, and when will it happen—these two questions define every woman’s existence.” So begins Spinster, a revelatory and slyly erudite look at the pleasures and possibilities of remaining single. Using her own experiences as a starting point, journalist and cultural critic Kate Bolick invites us into her carefully considered, passionately lived life, weaving together the past and present to examine why she—along with over 100 million American women, whose ranks keep growing—remains unmarried. This unprecedented demographic shift, Bolick explains, is the logical outcome of hundreds of years of change that has neither been fully understood, nor appreciated. Spinster introduces a cast of pioneering women from the last century whose genius, tenacity, and flair for drama have emboldened Bolick to fashion her life on her own terms: columnist Neith Boyce, essayist Maeve Brennan, social visionary Charlotte Perkins Gilman, poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, and novelist Edith Wharton. By animating their unconventional ideas and choices, Bolick shows us that contemporary debates about settling down, and having it all, are timeless—the crucible upon which all thoughtful women have tried for centuries to forge a good life. Intellectually substantial and deeply personal, Spinster is both an unreservedly inquisitive memoir and a broader cultural exploration that asks us to acknowledge the opportunities within ourselves to live authentically. Bolick offers us a way back into our own lives—a chance to see those splendid years when we were young and unencumbered, or middle-aged and finally left to our own devices, for what they really are: unbounded and our own to savor.

How To Marry Well written by Alice Alimi and has been published by Independently Published this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-25 with categories.

Marrying well is not about trying to find a wealthy mate; it is about finding someone that you trust and with whom you can build a future together. Qualities to look for in a potential spouse include excellent communication skills, loyalty, and shared values. But when you marry well, you will find a spouse who will acknowledge their sins. Seek change, grow, and so on. In the 21st century, it takes wisdom to marry well. Some time ago, I asked my husband, "What are the values you saw in me that made you decide to marry me?" Honestly, his answer overwhelmed me. He said first when I met you are so calm and I love the fact that you are beautiful also. So I loved the way you sounded the first time I saw you. You are so intelligent. You're honest, beautiful, intelligent, and respectful. I saw a woman who loved God; I saw a woman I could invest my future with, and your knowledge is second to none. You're an enigma. Your wisdom is imaginable. I saw a parenting partner, I saw the signs, I saw a woman of values, a woman who knows her what, I saw the connection between us, I saw how available both of us are, I saw a woman who's ready to learn, I saw a woman who's ready to acknowledge, I saw the communication skills, I saw loyalty in you, and above all, I saw a woman who loves me for better or for worse. And I said to myself, "I will not allow this beautiful lady to go from my hand," so I said to myself, "This is the one my heart beat for." Oh, my goodness, I was like, all things for me. Thank you so much, sir. Also, have a purpose ready before looking for a life partner. Don't just marry any woman you see; take your time. Understand their purpose. Have a principal as a young lady; don't make yourself available to every man. Know what you want in a man; marrying well is not about marrying into a wealthy home or one of high status or class; it is about getting it right. Is marriage really worth all the effort? My father told me a story some time ago. He said some years ago he was sitting on a chair in the village square. There was a very small gathering back then. A gentleman sitting there became friendly with him. He told him that he was a professor at one of the universities around town and that he had decided never to get married and do social service instead. This continued for 15 years. But one day, according to him, he had a severe headache, and no one was near. He felt that if he had a wife, at least she would have been nearby during that physical crisis. That changed his mind, and he got married. If one can manage his or her sexual and emotional needs without marriage, marriage does not seem all that necessary. A live-in relationship is also a good option. Can you marry me? Yes, if he or she is an almost perfect match for all the qualities that are important to you, Go ahead and marry him or her. What Does It Mean to Be Married? At a certain age, there is a strong desire to have a family and settle down. You might call it a desire to not be alone any more and fall head over heels in love and not care about the time or the place. It happens! Love is so strong when two people of the opposite sexes come together that they are inseparable in this world and the next.

"Today, only twenty percent of Americans are wed by age twenty-nine, compared to nearly sixty percent in 1960. The Population Reference Bureau calls it a 'dramatic reversal.' [This book presents a] portrait of contemporary American life and how we got here, through the lens of the single American woman, covering class, race, [and] sexual orientation, and filled with ... anecdotes from ... contemporary and historical figures"--
