This book presents concrete examples of acts of resistance reaching from a partial discontent to total rejection and participation in the attempted coup. Alongside known persons like Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Niemöller, or Elisabeth Schmitz, the focus is also put on groups of Christian resistance that have been barely noticed so far as for example the religious socialists, the Christian members of the National Committee for a Free Germany, or the conscientious objectors. The actions of the few dissidents are seen before the background of the political development and the behavior of the Protestant majority.

Defends the German Churches, in particular the Catholic Church, against accusations of passivity or collaboration with Nazism and the Holocaust. Until 1933, the Catholic Church and its political party, the Zentrum, were friendly toward Jews as well as militant opponents of Nazism. States that the Nazis saw in the Churches their greatest internal adversary; they persecuted them and planned to eliminate them after the war. Relates that many Catholics and other Germans aided Jews at risk of their lives, but martyrdom is not everyone's duty. The German bishops condemned the killing of human beings because of race or religion; the Pope aided Jews whenever he could do so discreetly. Contends that books that attack the Church and the Pope get published because they are popular and profitable, and that the Jews themselves are not free of guilt: during the Holocaust, Jewish councils collaborated with the Nazis; and Israel, in 1948 as well as later, has committed ethnic cleansing. Germans should stop self-mortification for crimes committed by an ideological clique and not by the people.

In 1933 more than 95% of the German population were members of one of the two major Christian religions. This picture did not change dramatically throughout the entire 12-year reign of the "Third Reich." This is all the more surprising in light of the fact that at the same time a large proportion of the German population also belonged to some Nazi organization. Apparently during this period, on some intellectual-religious level, these two irreconcilable roles of being a politically devout National Socialist and a conventional Christian were able to coexist side by side. This volume examines which forms this coexistence took on, the changes it experienced and the conflicts it created. It also explores the question whether the religious situation of that day and age can be reduced solely to a "struggle between Church and State" of the two major religious faiths.

Adolf Hitler und die meisten Nationalsozialisten standen dem Christentum insgesamt kritisch bis ablehnend gegenüber. Dennoch kam es in der Zeit vor der Machtergreifung 1933 und danach immer wieder zu rein politisch motivierten taktischen Annäherungen von Seiten der Nationalsozialisten gegen-über den Kirchen. Um christliche Wähler zu gewinnen und zu beruhigen, antichristliche Tendenzen in der nationalsozialistischen Bewegung seien eine Randerscheinung, gab es beispielsweise im Parteiprogramm der NSDAP den Paragraphen 24, in welchem es hieß, die Partei vertrete "den Standpunkt eines positiven Christentums" . Dieses wurde jedoch nicht weiter definiert und war offen für Interpretationen in viele mögliche Richtungen. Zudem gab es zwischen Christen und Nationalsozialisten häufig übereinstimmende Ansichten: Viele Christen waren, wie die Nationalsozialisten auch, nationalistisch, antimarxistisch, antisozialistisch und antisemitisch eingestellt. Ebenso lehnten viele den Versailler Vertrag und die Weimarer Demokratie ab. Die Übereinstimmung mit den Nationalsozialisten war häufig bei evangelischen Christen zu finden, jedoch gab es auch von katholischer Seite aus vereinzelt Sympathien für Hitler und Teile seiner Ideologie. In diesem Klima der Unzufriedenheit mit den bestehenden Verhältnissen, Sympathien für die Nationalsozialisten und dem Wunsch, dass sich in Gesellschaft und Kirche etwas ändern müsse, entstand in Thüringen 1927 die evangelische Kirchenbewegung Deutsche Christen.
