More than Bombs and Bandages exposes the false assumption that military nurses only nursed. Based on author Kirsty Harris’ CEW Bean Prize-winning PhD thesis, this is a book that is far removed from the ‘devotion to duty’ stereotyping offering an intriguing and sometimes gut-wrenching insight into the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) during World War I. More than Bombs and Bandages provides rich pickings for all those interested in nursing history, women in the Australian military the application of medical treatments and World War I. What I enjoyed most about is Dr Kirsty Harris’s ability to reflect those nurses voices in a way that was so real – one could be there, the settings were so well understood from her research and the language kind of made a time warp in the reading. Very satisfying. As you know I have that Peter Rees book, but I could not get into it after reading the historical one. It was like comparing a great documentary to Facebook trivia!!! Brisbane at War 1899-1918 is the Brisbane History Group’s twenty-sixth volume of papers. In total there are eleven chapters. All were mostly delivered at BHG functions. Two are from a seminar entitled ‘For Queen and Empire: Queensland and the South African War 1899-1902’ held on 26 May 2012 and seven were delivered at our seminars ‘Brisbane and World War I’ held on 6 September 2014 and 3 October 2015. An additional two papers were delivered elsewhere. Written by amateurs, professionals and academics, the chapters offer a diverse range of subjects. Themes include: - t· the importance of military medicine during the Second South African War - t· the Dutch attitudes and responses to the Boers and British and their decision to adopt a ‘neutral’ position - t· the story of the twelve Brisbane Grammar School old boys who fought in the Second South African War and World War I - t· the increasing activity at the Port of Brisbane as troops embarked for Europe and German raiders ventured into the Pacific - t· the underage enlistees, their motives, their experiences, their fate and the aftermath - t· the paediatricians and paediatric nurses who readily volunteered for duty in World War I • · the formation of the Women’s Peace Army and its ‘war against war’ … and conscription - t· the influences on Canon John Garland and his design for the Anzac Day service - t· the sorry saga of the Clark Memorial Windows at St John’s Cathedral - t· the response of Brisbane theatre to the changing attitudes of audiences in World War I - t· the opportunities to display patriotism in a range of different performances

Canola is one of the most important oilseed crops of the world, as its production over the last 10 years has grown much faster than any other source of edible vegetable oil. The short history of the food use of canola oil in Western countries has been marked by its GRAS (generally recognized as safe) accreditation by the USFDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) in 1985. Canola Oil is perhaps the only edible vegetable oil that by today's standards is considered to be nutritionally well balanced. Furthermore, its protein meal is well balanced in its amino acid content and perhaps in the not too distant future may commercially be upgraded for human consumption. The present monograph reports the latest advancements in the production, chem istry, analyses, nutritional properties, and commercial processing of canola and rapeseed. Recent developments in the biotechnology of canoIa production and ge netic alterations and improvements of seeds, new methods of analyses, and recent studies to upgrade the canola proteins are presented in 19 chapters. Extensive bib liographies provide the reader with an in-depth and thorough review resource in re lated areas. The monograph will be of interest to advanced undergraduate and graduate stu dents as well as researchers in universities, industries, and government laboratories. Food scientists, crop and agricultural engineers, chemists and biochemists, nutri tionists, and technologists as well as plant breeders will find it a valuable resource base in the latest trends and developments in canola research.

Structure And Organic Matter Storage In Agricultural Soils written by M.R. Carter and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-17 with Science categories.

Soils comprise the largest pool of terrestrial carbon and therefore are an important component of carbon storage in the biosphere-atmosphere system. Structure and Organic Matter Storage in Agricultural Soils explores the mechanisms and processes involved in the storage and sequestration of carbon in soils. Focusing on agricultural soils - from tropical to semi-arid types - this new book provides an in-depth look at structure, aggregation, and organic matter retention in world soils. The first two sections of the book introduce readers to the basic issues and scientific concepts, including soil structure, underlying mechanisms and processes, and the importance of agroecosystems as carbon regulators. The third section provides detailed discussions of soil aggregation and organic matter storage under various climates, soil types, and soil management practices. The fourth section addresses current strategies for enhancing organic matter storage in soil, modelling techniques, and measurement methods. Throughout the book, the importance of the soil structure-organic matter storage relationship is emphasized. Anyone involved in soil science, agriculture, agronomy, plant science, or greenhouse gas and global change studies should understand this relationship. Structure and Organic Matter Storage in Agricultural Soils provides an ideal source of information not only on the soil structure-storage relationship itself, but also on key research efforts and direct applications related to the storage of organic matter in agricultural soils.
