In science generally, but in theology from quite peculiar grounds, it appears to me a matter of doubtful propriety when a department of knowledge which is a common possession has not also a certain common form of treat ment, so that one immediately perceives from the style of discussion whether what is new is meant merely to attempt a better establish ment of an old knowledge of the truth. Where this mode of treatment is unnecessarily departed from, there arises not only the danger of ministering, even if involuntarily, to that craving after novelty which loves not what is true, but only what is new; but one also cuts asunder deliberately the threads of connection which bind to one another the different stages of culture and of knowledge. Excerpt from Christian Ethics: Special Part; Second Division: Social Ethics The moral life of society is developed in the Family and I the State; in the mid-regions or departments of Culture, Art, and Science; and, lastly, in the Church, whose inmost core is the Communion of saints. These several social organisms are to be regarded, on the one hand, as possessions, and hence as realized aims, in which man finds satisfaction, profit, pleasure; on the other, as moral individuals on a large scale, having each its special office to discharge. And I, the small individual, am to be a personal member of one and another of these social circles, to occupy with respect to them a relation at once of co-operation and appropriation, of toleration and devotion, while constantly aiming at my own perfection and the perfection of the whole. One essential side of man's destination is displayed in each of the social circles, and the purpose of Christianity is to develope the "new man" within each. It is in proportion as the Christian ideal of human nature is realized in them, that the kingdom of God attains a social, and at the same time an individual, appearance on earth. Excerpt from Christian Ethics: Special Part; First Division: Individual Ethics N the General Part of this work (page 46 3) I gave my views on the relation existing between that and the more strictly practical part, which latter is now presented in two divisions, namely Individual and Social Ethics, the first of which has regard chiefly to the individual, the other to society. So, then, the whole essay is closed herewith, and experts will be able to prove what value may belong to the method here applied to the treatment of Ethics. But if the Special Part was to be connected with the General as a side-piece, there was needed a certain amplitude of statement and a form corresponding to the subjects handled. And from the whole design of this work, it will scarcely require an apology that parts occur in it of an edifying character, or at least bordering thereon. On the whole, it is to be remarked, however, that in the progress of a more ample statement, it is not always easy to hit the boundary between what the author has to express and what he can fitly leave to the reader to say to himself, a difficulty which makes itself felt more especially where so much is treated of that in a certain sense is known to all, although all do not therefore by any means rightly understand or have fully acknowledged it.
