Despite their rich tradition of social concern, Protestants have historically struggled to articulate why, whether, and how to challenge unethical social structures. This book introduces Protestants to the biblical and historical background of Christian social ethics, inviting them to understand the basis for social action and engage with the broader tradition. It embraces and explains long-standing Christian reflection on social ethics and shows how Scripture and Christian history connect to current social justice issues. Each chapter includes learning outcomes and chapter highlights.

The Concept Of Equity In Calvin S Ethics written by Guenther H. Haas and has been published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-02-10 with Philosophy categories.

Ever since Calvin wrote his Institutes of the Christian Religion, admonishing the reader that “it would not be difficult for him to determine what he ought especially to seek in Scriptures, and to what end he ought to relate its contents,” scholars have endeavoured to identify a doctrine or theme at the heart of his theology. In his landmark book The Concept of Equity in Calvin’s Ethics, Guenther Haas concludes that the concept of equity is the theme of central importance in Calvin’s social ethic, in a similar way that union with Christ lies at the heart of his theology. Haas provides, in Part One, a brief survey of the development of the concept of equity from Aristotle to the scholastics, and as it was used by Calvin’s contemporaries. Haas also examines the influences on Calvin’s thinking before and after his conversion to Protestantism, with special attention paid to those influences that employed the concept of equity. In the heart of this study, Part Two, “Equity in Calvin’s Ethics,” Haas presents a thorough exposition and analysis of the extensive role the concept of equity plays in Calvin’s ethics, demonstrating that Calvin’s approach to ethics is not restricted to meditation of Scripture text. This book will force a re-examination of approaches to Calvin studies that have not appreciated the historical context and background of Calvin’s thought. The Concept of Equity in Calvin’s Ethics establishes that the Protestant tradition in Christian ethics, founded by Calvin, has a distinctive and vital contribution to make to Christian ethics, as well as to the broader discussion of social ethics as they are practised today.

Introduction To Christian Ethics written by Friedrich Schleiermacher and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with Religion categories.

Friedrich Schleiermacher is commonly regarded as the father of modern liberal theology and the dominant Protestant theologian between the time of John Calvin and that of Karl Barth. Yet until now his comprehensive views on Christian ethics have never been published. Introduction to Christian Ethics makes available for the first time Schleiermacher's most definitive and fully realized views on this topic. Although he was a singularly prolific writer (he left behind him a collection of books, lectures, sermons, and letters that fill thirty volumes), Schleiermacher never himself prepared a manuscript on Christian Ethics for publication. Two previously published editions were based on lecture notes and student transcriptions. Introduction to Christian Ethics is taken from the edition that utilizes the lectures of 1826 and 1827, the lectures that Schleiermacher himself felt most adequately reflected his views on the subject.

American Protestant Ethics And The Legacy Of H Richard Niebuhr written by William Werpehowski and has been published by Georgetown University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-09-20 with Religion categories.

In this careful analysis and evaluation of the monumental influence of Niebuhr, Werpehowski traces four streams that flow from Niebuhr's theology, particularly as it deals with ethics. In a tightly knit and comprehensive investigation of the work of four contemporary ethicists, important in their own right, Paul Ramsey, Stanley Hauerwas, James Gustafson, and Kathryn Tanner, Werpehowski explores how the legacy of Niebuhr has made an impact on their thought and work. He presents a clear, concise, nuanced, analytical criticism of the development of the four ethicist's construction of ethics-and does it in a way that interweaves and puts the four into a dialogue and conversation with Niebuhr and each other. Addressing a number of substantive issues, including the viability of just war tradition and the relationship between "church" and "world," American Protestant Ethics and the Legacy of H. Richard Niebuhr demonstrates that Christian ethics operates within a set of polar tensions and that such "conversations" as are developed within need to be a part of moral discourse inside and between a variety of communities of faith.

"If Catholic and Protestant ethicians were asked to name a single theologian who was qualified to write a comprehensive overview of the historical divergences of Catholic and Protestant positions on ethical questions, the bases for those divergences in fundamentally different philosophical and theological perspectives, and the possibilities for future convergences of the traditions, my guess is that James Gustafson would be the one. . . . This brilliant and tightly argued book . . . will be the most important book on moral theology to appear this year."—John Coleman, National Catholic Reporter

The aim of the "Church Times Study Guides" is to inform Christians about aspects of belief and practice in a systematic way so they may think, act and respond to the intellectual challenges of the day with greater confidence. Each short booklet includes a brief historical survey of its subject to show how understanding has developed over 20 Christian centuries and gives a range of theological viewpoints. Questions for reflection and exercises encourage groups to think around the issues presented and reach their own conclusions. Little is exercising the public mind and the Church more at the moment than ethical issues. Is the war in Iraq just? What is the right response to homosexuality? In order to weigh up these and other big questions, "Difficult Decisions" introduces the concept of Christian ethics and the use of the Bible in ethical debate.
