In the mid-nineteenth century, when the idea of religion as a private matter connected to the home and the female sphere won acceptance among the bourgeois elite, Christian religious practices began to be associated with femininity and soft values. Contemporary critics claimed that religion was incompatible with true manhood, and today's scholars talk about a feminization of religion. But was this really the case? What expression did male religious faith take at a time when Christianity was losing its status as the foundation of society? This is the starting point for the research presented in Christian Masculinity. Here we meet Catholic and Protestant men struggling with and for their Christian faith as priests, missionaries, and laymen, as well as ideas and reflections on Christian masculinity in media, fiction, and correspondence of various kinds. Some men engaged in social and missionary work, or strove to harness the masculine combative spirit to Christian ends, while others were eager to show the male character of Christian virtues. This book not only illustrates the importance of religion for the understanding of gender construction, but also the need to take into consideration confessional and institutional aspects of religious identity.

Considering the idea of Christian manliness, one immediately encounters a problem. Contemporary Christianity in "advanced society" seems to be absent of anything that resembles manly courage. Modern Christianity is fighting for relevance today from a position of weakness, and as such will fail in the future to be the societal pillar that it once was unless it recaptures the courageous and manly spirit of the "author and perfector of our faith" (Heb 12:2), Jesus Christ, who was both manly and courageous, and is the matchless example of manhood. Christian men have lost courage in our current culture because they are afraid of losing the praise of others. They are afraid of being "cancelled." Christian men are not being courageous in the home, church, or communities. This must Stop! Our King deserves courage as He had courage in the face of opposition. The enemy and fleshly comfort is being allowed to have an unchecked lead role as head of our lives. The fear of losing the praise of men, the fear of losing our jobs, the fear of fully believing the Truth of who Jesus is. This first battle is within us, as men, to overcome our own doubt and start living like we genuinely believe in Truth! My hope is that Christian Manliness: The Courage to Stand Firm is going to spur reflection and action and act as a reminder that we, as Christians, are on the side of Truth. We do not dabble in far flung conspiracy, false teachings or hope in man, but we stand firm on the Truth of Jesus Christ. We must be courageous in the face of opposition and be ready to accept the price of following Christ as we also must be willing to accept and repent of our own failures. Dr Vance traces the origins of Christian manliness in the traditions of English sporting prowess, in notions of chivalry and gentlemanliness, and in the preaching of vigourous virtue from St Paul to Victorian evangelists. He also considers the social and religious thought of Coleridge, Carlyle, F. D. Maurice and Thomas Arnold, showing how Kingsley and Hughes developed their own ideals of Christian manliness against this background, and in keen response to the troubles of their time: social unrest, religious rancour, war and disease. A final chapter traces the fragmentation and debasement of the ideal in the twentieth century.

The truth is that the spiritual failures of men as a group are manifesting themselves in almost all areas of life. One need only peruse the daily news to realize that nearly all crime – murder, rape, burglary, robbery, child and spouse abuse, and drunk driving, as examples – is committed by men. In numerical terms, it is men who dominate politics and the corporate world where moral collapse and scandals of various types erupt almost daily. Few churches can boast of the attendance and participation of their male members. View the sanctuary of nearly any church in America and it is glaringly apparent that men are outnumbered, sometimes two to one, by women. And sadly, the men who are present in church worship are rarely engaged by what is happening. The church must realign itself or reposition itself if it is going to reach men for Christ. The church of today, in terms of appeal to men, is very much unlike the church founded and nurtured by men – Christ and His disciples. Even though Christ clearly appealed to women and discipled women, the early church drew men to itself. The early church had everything that men needed and still need. Christ himself was the strong and determined leader, and the church movement of the time offered men much of what men need – risk, adventure, challenge, and even conflict. But the church of today seems much less masculine in its direction and determination. The church of today has been called “feminized”, a place of safety and nurturing and predictability. The church of today is a place of hugs and tears and tissues. And while this type of church is good and necessary, there must be an integration of masculinity in the overall programs and functions of the church.The challenge for the contemporary church is how to retain the “warm and fuzzy” feeling, the nurturing and safety, while re-masculinizing itself. How can the church effectively disciple men when men have, for the most part, “checked out”? How can the contemporary church reach men with a sense of adventure and risk-taking, a call to arms, and boldness that is an ever-present component of the male spirit?The church that was founded and nurtured by men must be revitalized by men if it is going to survive and reclaim its role in society and culture. The church, to be effective in spreading the Gospel to the nations, must disciple men to be the husbands, fathers, community and church leaders that they should.
