How did Christians in early modern Western Europe express their sense of community? This book explores the various ways in which religious identities were defined, developed and defended - within both Protestant and Roman Catholic contexts, in England and on the Continent - over a period vital for the history of Christianity. As such it will be of interest not only to historians of religion but also to students of social and cultural history in general.

The Christian community in India emerged from an Indian rather than a foreign or an imperial context. Its internal dynamics were shaped far more by Indian social realities than by missionary designs. This book presents a comprehensive social history of Christianity in north-west India, comprising Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, the Union Territories of Delhi and Chandigarh, and the Pakistani Punjab and North-West Frontier Province. The book discusses significant events in the history of the north-west up to 1947, after which it focuses only on India. These events left a lasting impact on Christianity and shaped its future course, culminating in the transfer of churches’ power from foreign missionaries to Indians and proliferation of churches, and the ongoing struggles of the Christian community. The author pays special attention to the Christian community’s caste composition—how caste status and social mobility affected intra- and inter-community relations—religious diversity, uneven demographic distribution, and development, as well as Christianity as a religious movement in the region.

He expertly maps current converging church movements--emerging and missional churches, mainline renewal groups, megachurches, urban mission, new monasticism, alternative worship, and expanding networks--and offers a positive assessment of the reshaping of today's church. --from publisher description

What if our western view of church isn’t God’s view of church? That’s the disruptive question church planter Bob Roberts Jr. wrestled with while connecting with top global church planters and pastors. Over time, his global experiences convinced him western believers would benefit from: taking our faith beyond Sunday to every dimension of life; shifting from a Christian worldview to a Jesus prism; and moving from religious leaders to disciple leaders. Lessons from the East invites you into the larger story God is telling around the world. It just may change your view of church and the global Christian community.

Little has been written on Palestinian society and almost nothing on the Christian communities. This book aims to fill that gap: to portray this unknown segment of Palestinian society and to describe the rich mosaic of the religious communities in Jerusalem. The work deals with the various aspects and problems of this minority within a minority--such as emigration, integration within the surrounding society, and the Christian Churches' position within the national states of Jordan and Israel. A major section deals with the Christians during the Intifada: the extent of their participation and involvement in it, as well as their national dilemma and search for identity. This work will be of interest to scholars and students in Middle Eastern studies, specifically the religious and social history of the Middle East.

What is the future of Christinaity in the 21st century' Are Western socities growing more secular, leaving cherished religious traditions behind' Or has modernity's secularising currents generated equally powerful desecularising and resecularising currents' Should secularisation theory, the dominant paradigm in the social scientific study of religion for much of the 20th century, be thrown away and out in the dustbin, as somes scholars have suggested' Or, does it remain useful, even indispensible, despite its limitations' Such questions have attracted increasing attention from scholars in many disciplines during recent years and are at the heart of this collection of essays, the majority of whom come from New Zealand.
