Christianity And Radical Democracy In The Philippines written by Christopher Moxham and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with Basic Christian communities categories.

"This book analyses faith-based development action in the Philippines by studying Catholic social movements and development studies in Southeast Asia. By drawing upon primary, qualitative data, this book examines cultural production and community resilience amid poverty and structural restraints. It also interrogates the discourse of Basic Ecclesial Communities, the smallest organisational unit of the Philippine Catholic Church, to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of the social movement. The author shows that the dream of local economic development and empowerment requires help from the Catholic hierarchy, particularly the organizational and leadership resources at the diocese level. This book is a unique contribution in opening up interdisciplinary approaches to religion, faith and social development. It will be of interest to researchers on Asian Studies, especially Southeast Asian Studies, Development Studies, the Anthropology of Development, Social Movements, and the Anthropology of Christianity, Missiology and Religious Studies"--

When tyrants come to power and Christians remain silent, the church betrays its prophetic role in the public sphere. Far from withdrawing from social-political engagement, Christians must grow in boldness as they embody a just, righteous, and godly love for their country and its people. In this collection of essays, Filipino evangelical theologians challenge the church’s complacency in the face of oppressive regimes. Addressing the specific realities of President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration, they draw on biblical studies, political theology, and ethics to provide a biblical and theological framework for Christians seeking to resist injustice in both the Philippines and beyond. Faith and Bayan is an excellent resource for students and leaders seeking an Asian evangelical perspective on Christian political engagement. It not only offers intellectual insight on the topic, but empowers its readers to fulfill a prophetic calling — to uphold democracy, peace, and human dignity.

Faithful To Secularism written by David T. Buckley and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-14 with Religion categories.

Religion and democracy can make tense bedfellows. Secular elites may view religious movements as conflict-prone and incapable of compromise, while religious actors may fear that anticlericalism will drive religion from public life. Yet such tensions are not inevitable: from Asia to Latin America, religious actors coexist with, and even help to preserve, democracy. In Faithful to Secularism, David T. Buckley argues that political institutions that encourage an active role for public religion are a key part in explaining this variation. He develops the concept of "benevolent secularism" to describe institutions that combine a basic division of religion and state with extensive room for participation of religious actors in public life. He traces the impact of benevolent secularism on religious and secular elites, both at critical junctures in state formation and as politics evolves over time. Buckley shows how religious and secular actors build credibility and shared norms over time, and explains how such coalitions can endure challenges from both religious revivals and periods of anticlericalism. Faithful to Secularism tests this institutional theory in Ireland, Senegal, and the Philippines, using a blend of archival, interview, and public opinion data. These case studies illustrate how even countries with an active religious majority can become and remain faithful to secularism.

Christianity Democracy And The Radical Ordinary written by Romand Coles and has been published by Lutterworth Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-02-25 with Religion categories.

These essays reflect possibilities and practices of radical democracy and radical ecclesia that take form in the textures of relational care for the radical ordinary. Hauerwas and Coels point out political and theological imaginations beyond the political formations, which seems to be the declination and the production of death. The authors call us to a revolutionary politics of 'wild patience' that seeks transformation through attentive practices of listening, relationship-building, and a careful tending to places, common goods, and diverse possibilities for flourishing.

Decolonising The Study Of Religion written by Jørn Borup and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-18 with Social Science categories.

Decolonising the Study of Religion analyses historical and contemporary discussions in the study of religion and Buddhism and critically investigates representations, possibilities, and challenges of a decolonial approach, addressing the important question: who owns Buddhism? The monograph offers a case-based perspective with which to examine the general study of religion, where new challenges require reflection and prospects for new directions. It focuses on Buddhism, one religion which has been studied in the West for centuries. Building on postcolonial theories and supplemented with a critical analysis of identity and postsecular engagement, the book offers new possibilities and challenges to the study of religion. It critically investigates decolonisation in the study of religion, subscribing to a third way between ‘objectivist’ and ‘subjectivist’ positions. Analysing the postcolonial and decolonial critique of the study of religion, with a particular focus on Buddhist studies in the West and in Japan, this book will be of interest to researchers in the field of Religious Studies, Buddhism, Japanese religions, anthropology, Asian Studies and those interested in religion and decolonisation.
