Is Christianity but a selection of stories, as some suppose, or is there more to it than that? Are its adherents guided by something real or simply following their own fancies? That there are communities of Christians is itself real enough, but is their mere existence its own justification? Events like the birth and death of Jesus are for the most part real enough, though they have been overlaid with stories that may at times be helpful symbolism but may also distract or distort. The very human way Jesus and his disciples followed during his ministry was also real enough, though again overlaid with interpretative material; however, the circumstances of his followers then varied, and those of Christian communities in succeeding generations differ still more. On the eve of his death Jesus sought to bind his followers together with one another and himself rather than offering them a way of otherworldly salvation. He may yet have expected such a salvation, as did the Apostle Paul, but it is more fruitful to follow the latter in seeing "life" to be gained in "death," in a "dying to sin," in this life.

Why did some people want Jesus dead, while others came to honor him as the Christ? What does it mean to say that he was raised," and how did this belief get started? What about the classical expressions of Jesus' religious significance? Where did they come from and what do they mean? What does belief in Jesus have to do with justice for the poor, the women's movement, concern for the environment, and respect for other world religions? These are just a few of the questions that have given Christology a whole new shape in recent years. Through the process of inquiry, conversation, and debate, students, clergy, and other professional ministers receive a complete introduction into the current thinking about Jesus' religious significance the present stage of Christology. In The College Student's Introduction to Christology, Loewe focuses on Christology today, especially the religious significance of Jesus for culture and society. By surveying Jesus' life in light of the Easter experience and by tracing the Christological process the process whereby Christians seek to capture and communicate in words Jesus' salvific impact this work grasps current Christian, and especially Catholic, theological reflection on the significance of Jesus. Loewe focuses on becoming familiar with issues regarding how people discuss Jesus today; grasping the historical and cultural background from which these issues emerged; and developing an understanding of the methods for resolving them. Part One deals with the question of the historical Jesus, Part Two examines the origin and meaning of Christian belief in Jesus' resurrection, and Part Three uncovers the Christological process as it unfolds through the New Testament, classical patristic dogma, and today. The ways in which Christians have sought to express Jesus' religious significance offer insight for what those exThe College Student's Introduction to Christology offers individuals a method for encountering Christ in the world. This introduction to the history of Christian thought is organized topically, analyzing the great issues that have occupied Christian thinkers since the earliest days of the Church. Questions of doctrine, such as the Trinity and the Incarnation, are dealt with in full, as well as such important issues in natural theology as the existence of God, freedom of the will, and the problem of evil. Urban demonstrates that the foundations of Christian belief are largely rational and that Christian thought, through history, has encompassed the full range of human experience.

Giussani argues that if we accept the hypothesis that the mystery entered the realm of human existence and spoke in human terms, the relationship between the individual and God is no longer based on a moral, imaginative, or aesthetic human effort but instead on coming upon an event in one's life. Thus the religious method is overturned by Christ: in Christianity it is no longer the person who seeks to know the mystery but the mystery that makes himself known by entering history. At the Origin of the Christian Claim presents an intriguing argument supported with ample documentation from the gospels and other theological writings.

So often in our daily walk, we struggle to find our way. We encounter people with good intentions who practice and preach flawed doctrine. Believers and unbelievers encounter the same struggles. Christians (believers) are not exempt from trials. The only difference is that believers have God's Word to guide them in processing the trials they face and allows them to apply his Word and lessons in solving their conflicts. The Reality of the Gospel Life addresses issues from grace to issues of spiritual warfare that we all face. This is a book that will inspire you to start with Christ; to engage in a deeper understanding of the history of the scriptures; and to share with unbelievers, family, and friends as well as members of your local church. There are phrases in this book that I would read three times as many pages just to catch a glimpse of. -Amy W. Goss (I am) Very touched and honored to read your work. The content was on target and applicable because biblically-based. This book must be published. The "real" people need a real perspective. Thank you for using your gifts. -Karen Styron Frank
