In February 2010, Christoph Schlingensief laid the foundation stone for Operndorf Afrika in Burkina Faso. An extensive illustrated book with over three hundred images is being published in 2020, the tenth anniversary of the "opera village", offering an in-depth insight into the history of the project, based on the rich fund of archive material from the last ten years, which has been reviewed and reorganized from an artistic perspective. Starting with the first sketches showing Schlingensief's initial thought processes, the book also includes photos of different phases of construction and life in the village today, providing information about the project's background and the local cultural programme that has been in existence for many years. In addition to a previously unpublished text by Christoph Schlingensief on the vision of the opera village, there are contributions by Aino Laberenz, Francis Kéré, and Elfriede Jelinek, who seek to bridge the gap between the utopian idea of Operndorf and its actual implementation. Christoph Schlingensief (1960-2010) was a German film, theatre, and opera director, author, and action artist.

Christoph Schlingensief written by Anna Teresa Scheer and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-22 with Performing Arts categories.

The first book to focus specifically on the late German artist Christoph Schlingensief's theatre work, it subversively merges art, politics and everyday life to imbue his productions both inside and outside the theatre with a re-energized concept of the political in art. Scheer traces Schlingensief's artistic lineage as a filmmaker with no formal training in theatre, whose work does not correspond to theoretical frameworks such as postdramatic theatre, Regietheater, or established categories of political theatre such as Brechtian, community, and agit-prop theatre. She explores how his work instead draws upon the highly performative gestures of the historical and post-Cold War avant-gardes as well the happenings and event-based practices of the sixties. Comprehensive case studies of six diverse theatrical and activist events are offered to demonstrate both the immediacy of Schlingensief's response to contemporary social and political events and his use of a range of artistic influences and different genres: Rocky Dutschke '68 (1996), Save Capitalism: Throw the Money Away! (1999) The Berlin Republic – or the Ring in Africa (1999) Hamlet (2001), Atta Atta – Art Has Broken Out! (2003) and the Church of Fear (2003). Key questions such as how his theatre functions as a provocation, and how an artist can insert themselves into the powerful flows of imagery produced by the perpetual global news cycle, form a coherent line of enquiry throughout each of the chapters. The significance of Schlingensief's artistic legacy of politicized theatre-making that pioneers new modes of active, aesthetic and public engagement in the political realm remains pertinent to topical socio-political debates and is of relevance to an international audience across a diversity of disciplines.

This book is the first study of the prolific German filmmaker, performance artist, and TV host Christoph Schlingensief (1960–2010) that identifies him as a practitioner of realism in the theater and lays out how theatrical realism can offer an aesthetic frame sturdy enough to hold together his experiments across media and genres. This volume traces Schlingensief’s developing realism through his theater work in conventional theater venues, in less conventional venues, his opera work focusing on the production of Wagner’s Parsifal at Bayreuth, and his art installations on revolving platforms called Animatographs. This book will be of great interest to scholars of theater, film, and performance art and practitioners.

From Bayreuth To Burkina Faso written by Sarah Hegenbart and has been published by Leuven University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-30 with Art categories.

Opera Village Africa, a participatory art experiment by the late German multimedia artist Christoph Schlingensief, serves as a testing ground for a critical interrogation of Richard Wagner’s notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk. Sarah Hegenbart traces the path from Wagner’s introduction of the Gesamtkunstwerk in Bayreuth to Schlingensief’s attempt to charge the idea of the total artwork with new meaning by transposing it to the West African country Burkina Faso. Schlingensief developed Opera Village in collaboration with the world-renowned architect Francis Kéré. This final project of Schlingensief is inspired by and illuminates the diverse themes that informed his artistic practice, including coming to terms with the German past, anti-Semitism, critical race theory, and questions of postcolonial (self-)criticism. From Bayreuth to Burkina Faso introduces the notion of the postcolonial Gesamtkunstwerk to disrupt the Eurocentric perspective on art history, exploring how the socio-political force of a postcolonial Gesamtkunstwerk could affect processes of transcultural identity construction. It reveals how Schlingensief translocated the Wagnerian concept to Burkina Faso to address German colonial history and engage with it from the perspective of multidirectional memory cultures.

The Routledge Companion To Architecture And Social Engagement written by Farhan Karim and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-11 with Architecture categories.

Socially engaged architecture is a broad and emerging architectural genre that promises to redefine architecture from a market-driven profession to a mix of social business, altruism, and activism that intends to eradicate poverty, resolve social exclusion, and construct an egalitarian global society. The Routledge Companion to Architecture and Social Engagement offers a critical enquiry of socially engaged architecture’s current context characterized by socio-economic inequity, climate change, war, increasing global poverty, microfinance, the evolving notion of professionalism, the changing conception of public, and finally the growing academic interest in re-visioning the social role of architecture. Organized around case studies from the United States, Brazil, Venezuela, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Thailand, Germany, Australia, Taiwan, and Japan the book documents the most important recent developments in the field. By examining diverse working methods and philosophies of socially engaged architecture, the handbook shows how socially engaged architecture is entangled in the global politics of poverty, reconstruction of the public sphere, changing role of the state, charity, and neoliberal urbanism. The book presents debates around the issue of whether architecture actually empowers the participators and alleviates socio-economic exclusion or if it instead indirectly sustains an exploitive capitalism. Bringing together a range of theories and case studies, this companion offers a platform to facilitate future lines of inquiry in education, research, and practice.

Why Theatre written by NTGent and has been published by Verbrecher Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-30 with Performing Arts categories.

For two years now, the Belgian theatre NTGent and the Berlin based Verbrecher Verlag have been publishing the series The Golden Books: Books on the theory and practice of contemporary performance art, on individual plays and general social questions. For the 5th volume, after months of cultural lockdown, when live arts were in a state of emergency and the whole institution rethought their priorities, NTGent asked more than 100 of the most influential artists and intellectuals in the world the question: Why theatre? Why is this art form so unique, so beautiful, so indispensable? From classical theatre to performance art and dance, from activism to political theatre and the performativity of everyday life, authors of all continents and generations delivered short essays, memories, manifestos, letters. Moments of aesthetic epiphany meet strong emotion, critical insights into the problems of representation and populism compete with utopian texts about the theatre of the future: more than 100 voices about the state of performing arts 2020. With contributions from Mohammad Al Attar, Lola Arias, Hector Aristizábal, Back to Back Theatre, Yael Bartana, Vincent Baudriller, Jérôme Bel, Chokri Ben Chikha (Action Zoo Humain), Bread and Puppet Theatre, Tania Bruguera, Luanda Casella, Nora Chipaumire, Benny Claessens, Colectivo LASTESIS, Kelly Copper (Nature Theatre of Oklahoma), Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Mihaela Drăgan, Radha D'Souza, Tania El Khoury, Nicoleta Esinencu, Douglas Estevam (MST), Tim Etchells (Forced Entertainment), Cibele Forjaz, Oliver Frljić, Gob Squad, Julien Gosselin, Sébastien Hendrickx, Florentina Holzinger, Hsin-Chien Huang, Isabelle Huppert, Manuela Infante, Christiane Jatahy, Jojo & Joyee (House of Muchness), John Jordan, Stefan Kaegi (Rimini Protokoll), Alexander Karschnia (andcompany&Co.), Susanne Kennedy, William Kentridge, Amir Reza Koohestani, Aino Laberenz, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Ursina Lardi, Jan Lauwers (Needcompany), Marco Layera, James Leadbitter (The Vacuum Cleaner), Frie Leysen, Angélica Liddell, Matthias Lilienthal, Édouard Louis, Florian Malzacher, Katie Mitchell, Sanja Mitrović, Ariane Mnouchkine, Ermanna Montanari & Marco Martinelli (Teatro Delle Albe), Maia Morgenstern, Chantal Mouffe, Yolanda Mpelé, Rabih Mroué, Kornel Mundruzcó, Ogutu Muraya, Nganji Mutiri, Jeton Neziraj, Daniela Nicolò & Enrico Casagrande (MOTUS), Boris Nikitin, Mamela Nyamza, Markus Öhrn, Toshiki Okada, Suzanne Osten, Thomas Ostermeier, Bouchra Ouizguen, Lies Pauwels, Luk Perceval, Alain Platel, René Pollesch, Philippe Quesne, Mokhallad Rasem, Milo Rau, Falk Richter, Tiago Rodrigues, Kathrin Röggla, Pia Maria Roll & Hanan Benammar, Didier Ruiz, Amir Sabra (Stereo48), Farah Saleh, Fabian Scheidler, Dennis Seidel, Kirill Serebrennikov, She She Pop, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Mårten Spångberg, Veit Sprenger (Showcase Beat Le Mot), Lara & Jonas Staal, Botho Strauß, Tea Tupajić, Carole Umulinga Karemera, Igor Vamos (Yes Men), Ivo van Hove, Gisèle Vienne, Dmitry Vilensky (Chto Delat), Marc-Antoine Vumilia, Sasha Waltz, Miet Warlop, Joanna Warsza, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Zentrum für politische Schönheit, Dominique Ziegler
