Designers and architects have to make decisions regarding color every day. But how does one find the necessary inspiration? The appropriate color? How do other designers and artists deal with the issue? With Chroma, the Greek word for color, as its title, this illustrated book provides answers to these questions and makes it clear that color is much more than mere decoration – it is one of the central problems of creative work. In the process, Chroma embraces the sensuous experience of color, inspiring and seducing the reader with unusual projects, from industrial products to color field painting. The book presents works by younger designers like Stefan Diez and Arik Levy as well as famous artists like Ellsworth Kelly. All of the works are presented in large-scale reproductions and also in a kind of color gradient, in which they are assigned to the chapters "monochromatic," "multichromatic," and "achromatic." The spectrum encompasses all conceivable shades and combinations, from brilliant and colorful through tasteful and subdued all the way to black-and-white contrasts. An additional chapter analyzes the work of outstanding artists, architects, and designers like Gerhard Richter, Konstantin Grcic, and Sauerbruch Hutton, who grapple with color to an unusual degree and have formulated characteristic chromatic worlds. An alphabetical index provides background information on the artists and studios selected.

"Chroma for Embedding Management in LLM Applications" This comprehensive guide offers an in-depth exploration of modern embedding management, focusing on the pivotal role of Chroma in large language model (LLM) architectures. Beginning with the mathematical foundations and practical workflow integration of embeddings, the book provides readers with a clear understanding of how dense, sparse, contextual, and multimodal representations underpin today’s AI systems. It thoroughly addresses the challenges of scale, performance optimization, and the stringent requirements for security and privacy that increasingly define enterprise-grade AI infrastructure. The heart of the book details Chroma’s robust system architecture, from core structural principles and extensible plugin frameworks to advanced querying and index strategies designed for high-dimensional vector search. Readers are guided through critical topics such as persistent storage, consistency models in distributed systems, and state-of-the-art search acceleration techniques. Carefully selected case studies and best practices demonstrate seamless integration of Chroma in LLM training, fine-tuning, and real-time inference workflows—highlighting strategies for data ingestion, embedding enrichment, validation, and cross-modal data fusion. Addressing the demands of production-scale deployments, the text delves into advanced topics like autoscaling, cost modeling, automated operations, and energy-efficient serving architectures. Equally, it dedicates substantial attention to trust and compliance through robust security, privacy-preserving processing, and governance. The concluding chapters look ahead to the evolving Chroma ecosystem, benchmarking innovations, and industry standards, equipping practitioners, architects, and researchers with the insights needed to build, manage, and future-proof next-generation embedding infrastructures for LLM-powered applications.

Many ancient and early modern works that are viewed in monochrome today were once painted in vibrant colors. Lost to time until recently, the pigments and other surface treatments that originally adorned these objects offer a deeper appreciation of the cultures from which they originate. This handsome volume features new research by more than thirty international experts in polychromy, including art historians, conservators, scientists, and photographers. Identified through advanced technologies, scientific analyses, and in-depth research, their discoveries of surviving traces of color span the globe and vary in material, including an Archaic Greek marble sphinx, an ancient Phoenician cloisonné furniture plaque, Mexica (Aztec) lime-stone sculptures, and medieval and Renaissance European marbles and bronzes. This wide-ranging publication explores how these works further our understanding of ancient ideas around skin color, race, and gender; summarizes recent advances in the field; and considers polychromy’s controversial rediscovery and modern reception— highlighting the role of reconstructions such as 3D-printed replicas and virtual animations in contemporary museum practice as well as the resurgence of polychromy techniques in postmodern and contemporary European architecture

During and beyond his lifetime, Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto (1892-1972) was a much loved and acclaimed painter who influenced generations of Philippine artists. His canvases of historical events and the mundane resonated with audiences both foreign and local for they captured what was perceived to be the essence of the Philippine experience and identity—the Philippine panorama bathed in the brilliant sunlight. This volume is published in conjunction with the exhibition, Amorsolo: Chroma, which invites audiences to revisit the plein air paintings and landscapes of Amorsolo to better understand why he received monikers such as “The Grand Old Man of Philippine Painting,” “the poet of color,” and “the painter of Philippine sunlight.” While these titles speak of Amorsolo’s palette, they also beg the question whether today’s audiences in the age of hypermedia appreciate those titles and Amorsolo’s colors in the same way. The exhibition’s exploration of color and empathy are further expanded in this volume through the examination of the psyche in the essays of Ditas Samson on the prevailing thoughts of the Filipinos of Amorsolo’s generation and the psychological respite offered by the natural environment by Prof. Femke Beute. Complimenting these is a reprint of the 1960 analysis of Amorsolo’s work through the eyes of painter and scholar, Fernando Zóbel.

Learning to work with light is an important milestone in every photographer’s career, and the ability to craft light to fit your vision for an image is a skill that cannot be overrated. Most often, that crafting of light is spoken of in terms of the quality and quantity of light. But there is an important, third component of light that heavily influences the final look of the image: the color of light. In Chroma: A Photographer’s Guide to Lighting with Color, photographer Nick Fancher helps you elevate your game when it comes to introducing the bold, creative, and intentional use of color into your work.
Whether you’re using a high-powered strobe or a small hotshoe flash, Chroma is for you. Nick begins with a discussion of color theory, gels, and white balance, then examines how to determine which colors complement your subject matter (whether that’s people or products). He moves on to cover topics such as:
- Balancing, mixing, and overpowering ambient light with artificial light
- Layering colors for unique color combinations
- Mixing hard and soft light to achieve extremely rich color
- Lighting detail and texture
- Modifier options, such as ring flash, snoots, barn doors, softboxes, and filters
- Gobos to control the light
- Post-processing for vibrant, powerful colors
- How (and why) to light with color, even when the end goal is a black and white image
Illustrated throughout with innovative and expressive imagery, Chroma also includes behind-the-scenes photos, lighting diagrams, and Lightroom settings so you can follow along from the initial concept through to the final edit.
