Chromium is a naturally occurring metal that is present mainly in the trivalent or hexavalent forms in small amounts throughout the environment. Chromium ore is not currently produced in Canada although about 74,000 tonnes of various chromium-containing materials were imported in 1991 to be used in a wide variety of industrial applications. This report summarizes information critical to the assessment of the metal as toxic, including identity, properties, production, and uses; entry into the environment; fate and concentrations; toxicokinetics and essentiality; effects on experimental animals and in vitro and on humans; and ecotoxicity.
