A fish out of water... Thomas Richard Jackson, a mundane man, with mundane aspirations, living a mundane existence, until an alien snatches him from a bad situation, transporting the human to his ship. Thomas discovers that he is no mere guest. The alien has big plans for him, plans that include transforming Thomas from a wimp to a hard-nosed killer. Why? Because the alien intends to send the human to assassinate the leader of a powerful interstellar empire. Since Thomas has never harmed a fly, the idea of him being an assassin troubles him greatly. But to refuse, is to condemn Earth to a vicious conquest, its inhabitants to enslavement. What choice does Thomas have? Earth's fate rests on his shoulders. But first he must survive the alien's intense (to say the least) training. Because it won't matter if Thomas survives the mission... so long as he is successful! This fish out of water will have to grow some teeth, and fast!

There is no evidence that there was any direct connection between the publication of the Liberator and the servile insurrection which occurred during the following August. It was, however, but natural that the South should associate the two events. A few utterances of the paper were fitted, if not intended, to incite insurrection. One passage reads: ... "Rather than see men wearing their chains in a cowardly and servile spirit, I would, as an advocate of peace, much rather see them breaking the heads of the tyrant with their chains."-from "The Turning Point"It's the rare history book that offers first-person knowledge combined with an understanding of the grander context in which the events depicted too place, but we have such a unique confluence in this 1919 book. Jesse May, born into a family of Midwest abolitionists and a Quaker noncombatant during the Civil War, grew up to become a respected historian and political scientist, and he brings his unusual perspective on slavery and abolition in America to this concise, clear-headed survey. From an expurgated tidbit condemning slavery in an early draft of the Declaration of Independence to the particular power of women in the antislavery movement, Macy's work is a brief but devastating argument about hypocrisy, democracy, and freedom in America in the mid-19th century.American political scientist JESSE MACY (1842-1919) was a professor at Grinnell College. He wrote extensively on political, social, and civic matters.

Excerpt from The Life and Letters of John Brown: Liberator of Kansas, and Martyr of Virginia To complete, Lanfrey says: Do not misconstrue events; history is not a school of fatalism, but one long plea for the freedom of man. In this pleading chronicle there are few chapters more pathetic than the career of my old friend john brown, which I long Since undertook to set forth, though strangely delayed in completing my task. It was begun in those dismal years when the Southern oligarchy and their humble followers at the North still controlled our degraded politics; and it has been continued through all the vicissitudes, the anxieties, and the assured repose of subsequent years. More than once in those earlier days recurred to me that gloomy magniloquence of the Roman annalist, where Tacitus complains that the tyranny of Domitian had suppressed the unheralded renown of Agricola: Patient sufferance we Showed, no doubt. Our ancestors saw the extreme of license, but we of servility for our inquisitors would permit us neither to hear nor to tell, - and we might have lost the use of memory along with free Speech, if to forget had been no harder than to forego praise. Now at last the occasion has returned, and we Speak out but few of us are left, survivors of others, and even of our old selves, so many years have passed over us in silence.
