De tous les témoignages qu'a suscités le drame du ghetto de Varsovie, Chronique d'une agonie est sans doute le plus bouleversant. Chaim A Kaplan prend chaque jour le risque de relater les événements dans son Journal. " Registre des larmes et du sang ", il devient une véritable " mission historique " et un témoignage que Kaplan souhaite transmettre aux générations futures. Chaim A Kaplan écrit jusqu'à la veille de son arrestation (4 août 1942). Grâce à son courage et à sa persévérance, nous connaissons mieux ce que fut la survie dans le ghetto de Varsovie, cet îlot de quelques kilomètres carrés. Les cahiers d'écolier sur lesquels Kaplan reporte les expériences quotidiennes ont été sortis à temps, juste avant la destruction complète du ghetto. Découverts par Abraham I Katsh, ils ont été publiés une vingtaine d'années plus tard. Une partie du Journal de Kaplan qui semblait définitivement perdue (3 avril 1941 -3 mai 1942) a été récemment mise au jour. Cette nouvelle édition offre au lecteur le récit des derniers mois de l'enfermement, une période marquée par un étranglement aggravé et une intensification de la violence dans un ghetto dont la population est plus nombreuse que celle des communautés juives de France et de Belgique réunies. Le ghetto de Varsovie condense toutes les phases de la catastrophe juive du xxe siècle. C'est aussi ce qui fait le prix de ce document qui, souvent cité par les historiens, demeurait pourtant depuis longtemps inaccessible au lecteur français.

How war has been remembered collectively is the central question in this volume. War in the twentieth century is a vivid and traumatic phenomenon which left behind it survivors who engage time and time again in acts of remembrance. This volume, containing essays by outstanding scholars of twentieth-century history, focuses on the issues raised by the shadow of war in this century. The behaviour, not of whole societies or of ruling groups alone, but of the individuals who do the work of remembrance, is discussed by examining the traumatic collective memory resulting from the horrors of the First World War, the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, and the Algerian War. Calendars map time, shaping and delineating our experience of it. While the challenges to tracking Jewish conceptions of time during the Holocaust were substantial, Alan Rosen reveals that many took great risks to mark time within that vast upheaval. Rosen inventories and organizes Jewish calendars according to the wartime settings in which they were produced—from Jewish communities to ghettos and concentration camps. The calendars he considers reorient views of Jewish circumstances during the war and show how Jews were committed to fashioning traditional guides to daily life, even in the most extreme conditions. In a separate chapter, moreover, he elucidates how Holocaust-era diaries sometimes served as surrogate Jewish calendars. All in all, Rosen presents a revised idea of time, continuity, the sacred and the mundane, the ordinary and the extraordinary even when death and destruction were the order of the day. Rosen’s focus on the Jewish calendar—the ultimate symbol of continuity, as weekday follows weekday and Sabbath follows Sabbath—sheds new light on how Jews maintained connections to their way of conceiving time even within the cauldron of the Holocaust.
