This combination reference book and history covers the inroads and achievements made on professional ball fields by Latin American athletes, the Major Leagues' greatest international majority. Following an "on this date in Hispanic baseball history" format, the author takes a commemorative look at generations of players from Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America, from the earliest pioneers through the well-known stars of today. There are two appendices: first Latinos by franchise; and an extensive chronological listing of Latino milestones by country. The book is fully indexed by players, teams, ballparks, and other contributors to Latino baseball history.

A professional baseball prospect given little chance of making the big time, Octavio "Cookie" Rojas nevertheless flourished at the sport's top level during a 16-year major league career. Never breaking ties with the profession he loved, after leaving the field as a player Rojas continued well into his 70s in the varied roles of coach, scout, manager, and broadcaster. Rojas broke into the big leagues in the early 1960s, a bygone era when there were only ten teams in each major league and the World Series was exclusively performed under the autumn sun. A native of Cuba, Rojas had to leave behind his country following the Cuban Revolution in order to pursue his ultimate baseball dreams. His side story of cultural assimilation, like those of his many ball-playing compatriots of the time, is a unique account of perseverance and dedication and a desire to succeed for himself and his family.

Having barely escaped the fiendish clutches of vampire vixen Alegria Pérez, teenage hemophiliac, half-vampire Joshua Puig and his high school cohorts grapple to survive the final 24-hour period of life-altering events thrust upon them by the cyclical--and deadly--arrival of the cobalt moon. Joshua and his passive band of half-vampires struggle to stay one step ahead of the revenge-consumed Alegría and the opposing, blood-lusting sect of half-vampires, who require the "Docile" blood strain in order to become full vampires. Intent on fulfilling their humanity-embracing ways, Joshua and his fellow half-vampires flee their home base of Miami in 1968 to a secret hiding locale in northern Florida. But with ulterior designs on facilitating the bloody rite of passage for her son, Raúl, and other "Hostile" half-vampire underlings, Alegría defies the supernatural underworld's highest authority and does everything in her power to hunt down the escaping teens, forcing a final, climactic showdown.

In The Curse of the Cobalt Moon, teenage hemophiliac, Joshua Puig discovers that he is a half-vampire. He has his life turned upside down when he is confronted with the existence of two types of half-vampires--a non-aggressive group, and another, infused with a much more combative and deadly blood stock. Joshua reluctantly accepts that he belongs to the group with the 'passive' supernatural strains. A cycle of seven blue moons completes the transformation for Joshua and all like him. Now, aged 16, a foster child living in Miami during the late 1960s, he is rapidly nearing this life changing event. Leading up to the "cobalt moon reckoning" Joshua, his fellow half-vampire, Milagros, and friends are thrust into their own life and death battle against the vengeance-seeking vampire vixen, Alegría Pérez.

Baseball With A Latin Beat written by Peter C. Bjarkman and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-11-15 with History categories.

Since Cuba's Esteban Bellan made his debut for the Troy Haymakers of the National Association in 1871, Latin Americans have played a large role in the major leagues. Nearly 15 percent of big league rosters are made up of Latinos, while the region's colorful and competitive winter leagues have been a proving ground for up-and-coming major league players and managers. Early Latin American stars were barred purely because of the color of their skin from playing in the major leagues. Players such as Jose Mendez and Martin Dihigo (the only player elected to the U.S., Cuban and Mexican halls of fame) made their marks on the Negro Leagues, turning the leagues' barnstorming tours into major attractions in many Caribbean countries. This history of the players and events that make up the rich tradition of Latin American baseball gives a unique insight to this long-neglected area of baseball.

It was an unlikely place for a city, scourged by disease-ridden mosquitos and pummeled by hurricanes. But for more than three hundred years, Mobile has thrived on the unlikely and endured the unimaginable. Mobilians love their gumbo but are likely unaware that it was first served up here by women sent from France to foster population growth. Times were once so dire for free blacks that a shocking number petitioned the courts to become slaves. The city witnessed the first operational submarine, the first Mardi Gras celebration and the last major battle of the Civil War. Author Joe Cuhaj navigates the backwaters of Mobile's fascinating history.

The St. Louis Cardinals, despite winning more World Series than any Major League franchise except for the New York Yankees, have seen their share of dry spells when they were shut out of the postseason. Like the American economy, the Cardinals have seen their fortunes cycle through prolonged ups and downs, with booms in 1885-1888, 1926-1946, 1964-1968, 1982-1987 and 1996-2011, and busts in 1889-1925, 1947-1963, 1969-1981 and 1988-1995. Drawing on years of research, this book chronicles the Cardinals' periods of success and failure and explains the reasons behind them.
