Different religious groups in Central and Eastern Europe influenced societies in the region after the fall of Communism and continue to play a crucial role in culture, politics, social networks and value transformations. As part of the REVACERN (Religion and Values in Central and Eastern Europe Research Network) project – supported by the EU Sixth Framework Program – more than 70 researchers from 15 countries in the region analyzed and discussed the most important trends in values, religions and religious communities and presented their findings in a comparative way. They tested well-known theories of secularization, nationalism, democracy and pluralism in the colorful region Central and Eastern Europe. This book summarizes their most important findings in seven chapters, addressing religion and its entanglements with geography, values, nationalism, Orthodoxy, education, legal regulation, civil society, social networks, new religious movements and new forms of religiosity. Each chapter also provides a regional overview.

People observe and transgress religious borders when they relate with faith and other faiths, when they shape communities, when they make decisions. A group of researchers have joined an inquiry into the forces of religious closure and openness in present-day Central and Eastern Europe. The volume is a result of a research community constituted within the REVACERN project – Religion and Values in Central and Eastern Europe Research Network, supported by the 6th framework program of the European Union. Chapters are structured in three sections, focusing on individual experiences of religion and spirituality, on religious elites, and on the interaction of religion with politics. Sociology, political science and history are triangulated to render a clear understanding of the individual experiences of religion and secularity, and of the strategic choices of religious and political elites, taking readers along an exploration of religious identity and otherness.

This volume concentrates on the 'conceptual boundary' through Europe which is determined by Western and Eastern Christianity. The chapters show that the boundary has never been a stable and defined division, but that it was also subject to change and development and a place of encounter and exchange between religions and cultures.

For decades, Christians of different confessions in Central and Eastern Europe were linked together by the experience of totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, which also significantly codetermined the relationships between Christian churches. After 1989, these churches became part of the life of a free society and found themselves in the midst of profound social, political, economic, and cultural changes. Thirty years after the fall of the Iron Curtain presents an opportunity to reflect on what form the local ecumenical communities of churches are taking in this process of transformation. The authors of this book not only share experiences that reflect the specific historical and local context of churches in Central and Eastern Europe but also seek to perceive particu - lar issues in the context of the changing global paradigm of the ecumenical mentality. The book explores the place of ecumenism in the lives of individual churches, opens up questions about the continuity of historical memory, analyzes new challenges addressed to the Christian community, and asks about the form and quality of mutual relations between Christian churches in the region. The volume wants to be a contribution to the search for a valid and reliable ecumenical hermeneutics for the 21st century, which uses the immediate ecumenical experience in the midst of a changing world. The book con - tains texts by Piotr Kopiec, Peter Szentpetery, Jaroslav Vokoun, Cristian Sonea, Andriyj Mykhaleyko, Robert Svato n, L'ubomir Batka, and Reinhard Thole .

Intellectual Horizons offers a pioneering, transnational and comparative treatment of key thematic areas in the intellectual and cultural history of Central and Eastern Europe in the twentieth century. For most of the twentieth century, Central and Eastern European ideas and cultures constituted an integral part of wider European trends. However, the intellectual and cultural history of this diverse region has rarely been incorporated sufficiently into nominally comprehensive histories of Europe. This volume redresses this underrepresentation and provides a more balanced perspective on the recent past of the continent through original, critical overviews of themes ranging from the social and conceptual history of intellectuals and histories of political thought and historiography, to literary, visual and religious cultures, to perceptions and representations of the region in the twentieth century. While structured thematically, individual contributions are organized chronologically. They emphasize, where relevant, generational experiences, agendas and accomplishments, while taking into account the sharp ruptures that characterize the period. The third in a four-volume set on Central and Eastern Europe in the twentieth century, it is the go-to resource for understanding the intellectual and cultural history of this dynamic region.
