Excerpt from Church-Wardens' Accounts of Croscombe, Pilton, Patton, Tintinhull, Morebath and St. Michael's, Bath: Ranging From A. D. 1349 to 1560 The losses and gains since the presentation of my last Report leave our Society one less in numbers than it was at that time. The finances, as will be seen by the annexed account, are in a satisfactory state. The expense of printing the third volume has been unusually heavy owing to the nature of the subject, but it is expected that our printing expenses will now return to their former level. There must, however, as I forewarned the Society last year, be an additional charge upon our funds in the coming year for transcriptions, as we shall not be able to obtain the volunteer assistance which has been so freely afforded us hitherto, and has saved the Society considerable expenditure. Our fifth volume is now in hand. It will contain two unpublished Custumals of Glastonbury Abbey of the 13th century, with some other documents bearing upon the same subject. I am glad to be able to report that the important work of dealing with this interesting subject has been kindly undertaken by Mr. C. I. Elton, Q. C., M. P., F. S. A. The single woman is a troubling and disruptive category. Does it denote all unmarried women, therefore creating a group which every female was part of at some stage in her life? Or, were the categories 'maiden' and 'widow' so culturally significant in late medieval England that 'single woman' was a residual category for women seen as anomalous? Was the category 'single man' used in an equivalent way and, if not, why? This study offers a way into the complex process of social classification in late medieval England. All societies use classifications in order to understand and impose order. In this book, Cordelia Beattie views classification as a political act, an act of power: those classifying must make choices about which divisions are most important or about who falls into which category, and such choices have repercussions. Defining how a group or an individual should be labelled, means variables such as social status, gender, or age, are prioritized. Rather than isolate gender as a variable, this book examines how it relates to other social cleavages. Using a variety of approaches, from social and cultural history, to gender history, and medieval studies, its original methodology offers an innovative approach to a range of historical texts, from pastoral manuals to tax returns, and guild registers.

This volume brings together scholars of history, manuscript studies, and art and architectural history to examine in conversation the varieties of medieval archival acts, the heterogeneity of collections, and the motivations of collectors. It is united by the historically flexible concept of the archive, and contributors examine material from Seville to Prague, from the early Christian period through the Reformation. Premodern collections and archival practices are increasingly becoming the subject of academic inquiry. Chapter authors investigate how institutional, communal, and familial identity accrued to material culture, including illuminated manuscripts, ecclesiastic vestments, ancient sarcophagi, and reliquaries. Others examine the social impulses behind the documentation of such collections, namely through the creation of inventories, but also in the production, management, and use of parchment records, including cartularies, estate records, and legal documents. Finally, contributors question how medieval people evaluated historical age and outmoded artistic styles; shaped and promoted collective memory through preservation, display, and ritual; and attached value, both monetary and symbolic, to their collections.
