Esta obra tem como objetivo refletir acerca de como as ciências sociais podem ser apresentadas às crianças. Um espaço que dê escuta às crianças, oferecendo vários pontos de vista distintos, possibilitando novos olhares sobre a vida em sociedade. Na construção desse caminho, buscamos discutir sobre o que é ser criança e infância. Compreendemos a criança como uma construção social, além de discutirmos também sobre o desenvolvimento psíquico e social, apresentando caminhos trazidos pela periodização histórico-cultural. Problematizamos o ambiente escolar repensando a educação, com Larrosa, pelo par sentido e experiência. Inspiramo-nos na trajetória realizada com a filosofia para/com crianças, aproximando dela as ciências sociais. Identificamos a frágil inserção das ciências sociais nos currículos escolares brasileiros e descrevemos como foi desenvolvida a experiência de práticas de filosofia e ciências sociais no ensino infantil e fundamental no município de Cariacica, no Espírito Santo, pela leitura de documentos dados pela Secretaria da Educação do referido município. Vimos na leitura a possibilidade de oferecer as ciências sociais às crianças elaborando histórias infantis sobre conceitos dessa disciplina. Percebemos que esse caminho que leva as ciências sociais ao ensino infantil e fundamental é possível. Podemos assim dizer que esse é um embrião a ser desenvolvido e pensado dentro do ambiente escolar.

O que sabemos da infância sul-americana? Quais estudos têm problematizado as diversas e complexas maneiras das crianças viverem suas infâncias nos contextos geográficos em que estão inseridas? No desafio de responder essas e outras questões, este livro oferece perspectivas sobre a infância na América do Sul a partir do campo da Sociologia da Infância e de um diálogo interdisciplinar com campos científicos tais como a Antropologia da Infância, História da Infância, Geografia da Infância, entre outros, que compõem os Estudos Sociais da Infância, também conhecido como Childhood Studies. Amparado no conceito de campo científico nas obras de Pierre Bourdieu, identifica-se os temas consagrados, as abordagens teóricas, os caminhos metodológicos, as áreas predominantes nos estudos, e os demais elementos estruturantes do campo da Sociologia da Infância na América do Sul. Em um primeiro momento, as produções do Hemisfério Norte tiveram grande influência na produção do conhecimento sociológico sobre a infância no continente, entretanto, a pesquisa realizada buscou evidenciar as produções e teorizações da infância no Hemisfério Sul. This edited volume concerns childhood throughout South America after the 1990s, a period and territory of special complexity marked by the beginning—or intensification of—political neoliberalisation throughout the region. The decade also saw the ratification of the International Convention on Rights of the Child and post-dictatorial processes of political and social democratisation. The editors of this book explore the tension this juxtaposition has generated between logics and processes of dissimilar orientations. Within this framework, chapters investigate the neoliberalisation and institutionalisation of children’s rights and consider similarities and differences with respect to other regions. They also explore changes in schools and educational systems, as well as the phenomenon of the internal and external child and family migration.

This edited collection explores the roles of material culture in socializing young people through their play. Authors explore notions of play from diverse cultural viewpoints, as well as the impact of technology on play, and the kinds of resistant and liberatory play children might partake in. Informed by the field of performance studies, the book considers play as performance, asking questions about embodiment at physical, relational, and ideological levels, and considering «performance» to be part of identity construction, as well as a component of enculturation into various societies. Of interest are the ways in which children try on various identities through their play, and how these identities may (re)define their attitudes, values, and beliefs. As curriculum and instruction have become open to the use of games - and children's material culture more generally - as a forum for learning, intersections have emerged between schooling and culture at large. This book broadens the scope of «learning» to investigate how these cultural artifacts are open or closed to multiple perspectives and narratives, as well as how their use is constituted both in and out of the classroom.
