This book presents a contrastive analysis of various forms of address used in English and Italian from the perspective of cultural semantics, the branch of linguistics which investigates the relationship between meaning and culture in discourse. The objects of the analysis are the interactional meanings expressed by different forms of address in these two languages, which are compared adopting the methodology of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage. The forms analyzed include greetings, titles and opening and closing salutations used in letters and e-mails in the two languages. Noticeably, the book presents the first complete categorization of Italian titles used as forms of address ever made on the basis of precise semantic criteria. The analysis also investigates the different cultural values and assumptions underlying address practices in English and Italian, and emphasizes the risks of miscommunication caused by different address practices in intercultural interactions. Every chapter presents numerous examples taken from language corpora, contemporary English and Italian literature and personal e-mails and letters. The book encourages a new, innovative approach to the analysis of forms of address: it proposes a new analytical method for the analysis of forms of address which can be applied to the study of other languages systematically. In addition, the book emphasizes the role of culture in address practices and takes meaning as the basis for understanding the differences in use across languages and the difficulties in translating forms of address of different languages. Combining semantics, ethnopragmatics, intercultural communication and translation theory, this book is aimed at a very broad readership which includes not only scholars in linguistics, second-language learners and students of cross-cultural communication, but virtually anyone interested in Italian and English linguistics as well as in cultural semantics. The approach taken is interdisciplinary and brings together various fields in the social sciences: linguistics, anthropology, cross-cultural studies and sociology.

Ma cosa c’entrano quelle foto con i casi di omicidi di alcune donne barbaramente uccise e sulla cui pelle sono impressi dei numeri? Il passato spesso segna per sempre le nostre vite e non c’è via di salvezza per sfuggire alla mente diabolica e malata dell’uomo. Adriana Gabriella Elsa Deplano è nata nel 1985 ad Aosta, dove vive tuttora. Diplomata come Tecnico dei servizi turistici, lavora nella grande distribuzione. La storia è ambientata quasi interamente in una Roma dei nostri giorni. Il personaggio principale attorno a cui ruota tutto è il Dott. Stefano Monastra, un capitano d’industria importante e di successo, che sino alla data di un evento che scuoterà tutta la sua vita, vive in modo molto sereno insieme alla sua famiglia in una bella villa ai Parioli. La quiete viene turbata quando, per un errore del commercialista, il Monastra riceve un avviso dell’Agenzia delle Entrate con cui gli viene richiesto il pagamento di €.1.248.000,00. Questo atto fiscale sconosciuto e incomprensibile, che si manifesta sotto le sembianze di una busta verde, sconvolgerà la vita del protagonista, della moglie Barbara, delle figlie Danila e Loretta, nonché di una collega di università di Danila, la sua amica siciliana Emanuela Turrisi che è, di fatto, entrata a far parte della famiglia Monastra ormai da qualche anno. Nel romanzo viene più volte sottolineato il rapporto tra la ricchezza ed opulenza, tante volte accompagnate a valori vani e solo di facciata, con vite condotte in modo meno appariscente ma più vere e concrete. Il protagonista è impegnato in una lotta interiore che lo porta a fronteggiare una situazione inedita e inaspettata, dove emergono in modo chiaro ed inequivocabile le incertezze, le preoccupazioni e le speranze di chi oggi fa impresa in modo leale e appassionato. L’accento viene posto sulla mancanza di competenza di alcuni professionisti che tuttavia riescono a vendersi bene, impressionando i loro clienti con molta appariscenza e forma, priva tuttavia della sostanza necessaria per garantire risultati eccellenti. Nel romanzo emergono in modo importante sentimenti genuini come l’amore che lega il Monastra alla bella e intelligente moglie Barbara e i valori della famiglia unita che trova il modo di stare insieme e divertirsi anche durante il rito della colazione del sabato mattina. Nel momento del bisogno il protagonista può contare su poche persone. Uno tra questi è il suo grande amico Fabrizio Buttà, B B per gli amici, che si rivelerà una persona molto capace e arguta. Gli altri personaggi sono i collaboratori di azienda del Monastra, il direttore amministrativo Dott. Francesco Le Pera, la segretaria Giannina, il vecchio consulente, il Dott. De Arcangeli e quello nuovo, il Dott. Fabio Mazzotta, oltre al suo amico Ingegnere Giulio Mastrapasqua, che insieme alla moglie fanno i volontari alla Mensa di Sant’Egidio. A svolgere questa attività di volontariato ci saranno anche i coniugi Monastra, dopo che Fabio Mazzotta avrà risolto il loro problema con l’Agenzia delle Entrate. Gli altri temi affrontati sono proprio l’amore verso il prossimo, con la possibilità di fare del bene ed infine la superiorità della sostanza sulla forma.
