Depois de muito pensar e procurar, entendi que era chegada a hora de apresentar algo novo, diferente, arrojado e desafiador na Psicologia do Esporte. Há muito tempo se ter lido e encontrado bons livros didáticos ou de consultas, que tratam das questões básicas de Psicologia do Esporte, quais sejam: os atletas, os treinadores, a torcida, as famílias, os árbitros, as relações interpessoais, a motivação e a liderança, a ansiedade e a agressão esportivas, o medo e a vergonha, o estresse e o abandono. A variedade de textos ficava por conta da literatura de base e da maneira como se encara cada modalidade e a temporada em que cada equipe descrita se encontrava. Mas minha curiosidade e atenção estavam focadas em outros campos, em outros detalhes. Com a consciência da temporalidade e do espaço que ocupo, neste século XXI, diante da coordenação de um excelente programa de pós-graduação em Desenvolvimento Humano e Tecnologias (no campus de Rio Claro, Unesp) e na dianteira de um dos grupos de pesquisas mais agressivos da área (Lepespe - Laboratório de Estudos e Pesquisas em Psicologia do Esporte) arrisquei em focar num aspecto que tumultua o homem (em especial os atletas) da pós-modernidade: as novas mídias. Afinal, do que estou falando? Bem, se uma torcida ou um dirigente ou uma crise familiar é suficiente para criar uma crise emocional em nossos atletas, como pode a Psicologia do Esporte negligenciar a imersão de nossos jovens atletas (dos mais inexperientes ao de mais alto rendimento) no mundo virtual? Que mundo será este? E como este mundo coexiste junto aos treinamentos, competições, compromissos esportivos? Inova, ainda, ao apresentar formas de pesquisar, neste mundo virtual, com a seriedade que cabe ao investigador responsável e cônscio de seu dever de propagar a ciência e avançar para terrenos inusitados, com procedimentos igualmente inovadores. Está aí, algo que faltava à Psicologia do Esporte, no Brasil, mas que já é um fato em países como Itália, Israel, França, Portugal, Bélgica e Alemanha. Um avanço ao que, de mais novo, existe no academicismo, sem se desvincular do tradicional.
