Este livro, resultado da minha dissertação de mestrado, apresenta um panorama da luta do negro pela cidadania em São Paulo nas décadas seguintes à Abolição (1891-1930). Por um lado, a investigação procurou identificar os percalços existenciais enfrentados por homens e mulheres negras no contexto do pós-emancipação, principalmente por conta da permanência do racismo na cidade de São Paulo. Por outro lado, nos debruçamos nas várias estratégias e ações do negro para conquistar inserção social e direitos básicos de uma cidadania, tornada possível. A pesquisa teve como principal fonte primária os jornais da imprensa negra. Esses periódicos foram publicados por um pequeno grupo de negros letrados, considerados os legítimos representantes da comunidade negra. Por meio desses jornais, que foram publicados de forma intermitente, entre 1915 e 1963, foi possível compreender inúmeros aspectos da vida cotidiana do negro. Nesses canais de comunicação, situações de preconceito eram denunciadas, seja no mercado de trabalho ou nos espaços públicos e de lazer. Além disso, os líderes desses jornais procuravam incentivar e conscientizar os negros acerca de seus direitos e deveres, principalmente no campo da educação.

Leonardo Ângelo faz jus ao nome "Ângelo", aquele que anuncia a mensagem. O mensageiro! A mensagem é estimular os negros e negras a romperem o silêncio e a inviolabilidade da luta contra o racismo, na luta antirracista no âmbito da luta de classe. Como mensageiro, já antecipa o debate sobre o racismo estrutural e institucional, ao dar vida às imagens dos trabalhadores negros e negras do jornal O Lingote (da Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional), mostrando o cotidiano da fábrica, como também seus familiares (visto em outras fontes), e até mesmo o carnaval realizado por agentes populares e o carnaval realizado pelos clubes o¬ciais da cidade. A ilusão das mães negras no posto de puericultura, no sentimento de igualdade muito distante da realidade da fábrica e da educação, a Escola Técnica Pandiá Calógeras que, teoricamente, formava atendendo à demanda da empresa e do estado e que acabava por determinar a lógica dos que iriam receber ordens. Assim, de uma análise em que a fábrica representava uma visão do estado naquele momento histórico, ele parte das fotos para o periódico da empresa (Capítulo II) e neste demonstra o quanto das histórias de sucesso apresentadas pelo periódico e das estruturas de poder estavam permeadas por uma lógica racializada (representativa só para aquela época?) que "limitava o sucesso" para todos. Do periódico, Leonardo vai para a "carne negra" (Capítulo III), pois, por meio de entrevistas, evidenciou a dinâmica dos movimentos das negras e negros, dos movimentos negros pela cidade. É como um "chá revelação" da raça na formação da classe, uma forma de olhar original, reveladora e denunciante de uma "democracia racial" à brasileira que sempre segregou, mas se camu ou na dinâmica de classe. 2023 Honorable Mention, Brazil Section Humanities Book Prize, Latin American Studies Association (LASA) This book explores visual portrayals of blackness in Brazil to reveal the integral role of visual culture in crafting race and nation across Latin America. In the early twentieth century, Brazil shifted from a nation intent on whitening its population to one billing itself as a racial democracy. Anadelia Romo shows that this shift centered in Salvador, Bahia, where throughout the 1950s, modernist artists and intellectuals forged critical alliances with Afro-Brazilian religious communities of Candomblé to promote their culture and their city. These efforts combined with a growing promotion of tourism to transform what had been one of the busiest slaving depots in the Americas into a popular tourist enclave celebrated for its rich Afro-Brazilian culture. Vibrant illustrations and texts by the likes of Jorge Amado, Pierre Verger, and others contributed to a distinctive iconography of the city, with Afro-Bahians at its center. But these optimistic visions of inclusion, Romo reveals, concealed deep racial inequalities. Illustrating how these visual archetypes laid the foundation for Salvador’s modern racial landscape, this book unveils the ways ethnic and racial populations have been both included and excluded not only in Brazil but in Latin America as a whole.

In Brazil and throughout the African diaspora, black women, especially poor black women, are rarely considered leaders of social movements let alone political theorists. But in the northeastern city of Salvador, Brazil, it is these very women who determine how urban policies are established. Focusing on the Gamboa de Baixo neighborhood in Salvador’s city center, Black Women against the Land Grab explores how black women’s views on development have radicalized local communities to demand justice and social change. In Black Women against the Land Grab, Keisha-Khan Y. Perry describes the key role of local women activists in the citywide movement for land and housing rights. She reveals the importance of geographic location for understanding the gendered aspects of urban renewal and the formation of black women–led social movements. How have black women shaped the politics of urban redevelopment, Perry asks, and what does this kind of political intervention tell us about black women’s agency? Her work uncovers the ways in which political labor at the neighborhood level is central to the mass mobilization of black people against institutional racism and for citizenship rights and resources in Brazil.
