Gaetano Filangieri (1752-1788), publicista, jurisconsulto, escritor y filósofo napolitano, es universalmente conocido por su obra Scienza de la Legislazione (1780-1785). Su proyecto inicial de composición de la obra en siete libros se vio truncado por su temprana muerte, llegando a redactar cuatro. En vísperas de la Revolución francesa, la Ciencia de la Legislación es un fiel exponente del pensamiento ilustrado en el ámbito de un nuevo derecho político y penal, cuando en Europa se creía posible una transición pacífica de un sistema semifeudal a un nuevo orden basado en una Monarquía moderada. Ciencia de la Legislación fue tempranamente conocida en España, pues su primera traducción por Jaime Rubio comienza a publicarse un año antes de la muerte de Filangieri, siendo más tarde reproducida con no pocas alteraciones por un autor anónimo en 1813. Para esta edición, Luis Prieto Sanchís, catedrático de Filosofía del Derecho de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, ha escogido la que puede considerarse segunda o tercera traducción española a cargo de Juan Ribera. La obra, en seis tomos, vio la luz en pleno trienio liberal bajo el sello de la imprenta de Fermín Villalpando (1821-1822) y se inicia precisamente con una ácida crítica de la versión del primer traductor. Finalmente, nuestra versión, en dos volúmenes, se enriquece con el prólogo de Darío Ippolito, profesor titular de Filosofía del Derecho en la Universidad Roma Tres.
