La ciencia –a partir del Medioevo tardío– y la tecnología –desde el inicio de la era industrial– pasaron por etapas signadas por la ideología de cada época. En ese devenir histórico, la producción y el manejo del conocimiento fueron –y son– interdependientes de las bases socio-económico-culturales. Los científicos, representantes de la intelectualidad global, no deberían desconocer el frecuente divorcio entre la Ciencia y Tecnología (CyT) y el bienestar general de la sociedad. Sin embargo, se discute mucho sobre experimentos, resultados y papers, pero muy poco sobre política científica. En un intento de aportar a la necesaria discusión de estas cuestiones, Ciencia y Tecnología en tiempos difíciles reflexiona sobre el origen y la evolución de la hoy denominada CyT; analiza el neoliberalismo, el postmodernismo y el neocolonialismo como estrategia, táctica y consecuencia en el escenario regional y global; postula el paralelismo entre las bases neoliberales y los hábitos y las conductas del entorno científico; proporciona elementos para discutir la CyT en una convergencia regional; aporta tópicos para una necesaria soberanía del conocimiento, y muestra los recientes cambios político-ideológicos en la región como ejemplos del vínculo entre el universo ideológico-político y el desarrollo de la CyT. Con un lenguaje accesible que facilita su lectura tanto a científicos y tecnólogos como a no especialistas, este libro acerca argumentos legítimos para la defensa de la Ciencia, Tecnología y Sociedad, contribuyendo a la comunicación pública de la ciencia en un área poco conversada y mucho menos discutida.
