A Tombstone Tourist In Cuba immerses you in a world that is rich in history, culture, and religion. In this book of photography, you will take a detour from the beaten path of beach resorts and discover this storied Caribbean nation via its cemeteries and monuments. Here you will learn about how the country’s population celebrates, pays tribute to, and mourns its people. This book explores the symbolism and historical significance of different tombs, crypts, and monuments. Amid the marble pathways, pink bougainvillea, and intricately carved monuments are powerful reminders of lives lived. Some tombs tell the story of a person who has risen to mythical levels, while others demonstrate the honour afforded people who died under tragic circumstances. A gravesite can tell you so much about people: who they were, what they represented, how they were loved . . . But this book is not just a guided tour of Cuba’s many and varied cemeteries. It is a photographic journey into the heart of a nation. Through these stories and images, you will uncover a side to the people and the country that you may never have otherwise come to learn. And who knows? Perhaps you’ll take a detour of your own, the next time you travel, and explore a cemetery for yourself. Why not start with Cuba?

In February and March 2008, the International Program and the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art organised the Museum's first symposium on the modernist architecture of the Caribbean and bordering Latin American countries, in collaboration with the Caribbean School of Architecture at the University of Technology, Kingston, Jamaica. The goal was to encourage scholarly, curatorial and broader educational awareness. Topics covered included regional and international legacies, preservation, environmental sustainability and urban planning, as they relate to modernist architectural history and contemporary practice. The presenters were leading architects and architectural historians from the region, and attendees included their colleagues as well as local and international university students, policy makers, civic leaders and developers from Jamaica, the surrounding Caribbean isalnds and the United States. This illustrated volume, co-published by MoMA and Archivos de Arquitectura Antillana (AAA), an architectural journal based in the Dominican Republic, presents the papers from this critical symposium in both English and Spanish, making them accessible to a broader public.

Revolution Of Forms written by John A. Loomis and has been published by Princeton Architectural Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Architecture categories.

"A revolution of forms is a revolution of essentials."-Jos Mart, Cuban intellectual and independence leader. Although the current surge of interest in Cuba has extended to that country's architecture, few know that the most outstanding architectural achievement of the Cuban Revolution stands neglected just outside Havana. The Escuelas Nacionales de Arte (National Art Schools), constructed from 1961 to 1965, were the result of an educational program initiated by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara soon after the Revolution of 1959. The architects they commissioned created an organic complex of brick and terra-cotta Catalan vaulted structures that reflected the optimism and exuberance of the period. The schools attempted to reinvent architecture, just as the Revolution hoped to reinvent society. However, even before construction was completed, the schools fell out of official favor and were subjected to an attack that resulted in their subsequent "disappearance." An ideological campaign branded them politically incorrect, a bourgeois luxury that was not in keeping with the Revolution. The buildings fell into disuse and, abandoned to the jungle, were literally overgrown. Now, almost 40 years later, Cuba is beginning to recognize and reclaim these significant works of architecture. Revolution of Forms investigates the history and politics surrounding the creation of these structures as well as their subsequent abandonment. The text is accompanied by archival photographs, plans, and images of the present condition of these structures.
