Se nel 1492 qualcuno avesse rivelato ai sovrani di Spagna Ferdinando e Isabella anche solo la metà delle conseguenze che avrebbero avuto i viaggi di Cristoforo Colombo da loro finanziati, molto probabilmente sarebbe stato incarcerato come un volgare truffatore. Nessuno poté fare nulla, invece, contro la forza dirompente della realtà. Già a partire dal 1493, infatti, gli equilibri e gli assetti del pianeta furono letteralmente rivoluzionati: due mondi che, dopo la frattura geologica di 200 milioni di anni prima, erano rimasti estranei e ignoti l'uno all'altro, si incontrarono e si mescolarono, in un processo di reciproca osmosi e contaminazione che, da allora, è diventato sempre più intenso. Alla luce della storia ambientale, inaugurata da Alfred Crosby con il concetto chiave di «Scambio colombiano», e delle più recenti ricerche antropologiche, archeologiche e storiche, Charles Mann esplora la genesi e l'impetuoso sviluppo di questo «mondo nuovo», unico e globale, nato da un autentico terremoto ecologico. Le navi europee trasportarono oltreoceano - insieme ai coloni e, poi, agli schiavi - migliaia di specie botaniche sconosciute, e ne importarono altrettante. Il che spiega la presenza dei pomodori in Italia, delle arance in Florida, del cioccolato in Svizzera e dei peperoncini in Thailandia. Al traffico di piante e animali s'intrecciò poi la circolazione involontaria e clandestina di altre «creature» che ebbero quasi sempre effetti devastanti sull'ambiente e sulla salute degli indigeni: vermi, zanzare, scarafaggi, topi, funghi, batteri, virus e microrganismi di ogni specie, che s'insediarono nelle nuove terre e modificarono radicalmente paesaggi ed ecosistemi da un capo all'altro del pianeta. Ma lo sbarco di Colombo ebbe anche altre conseguenze. Ottant'anni dopo uno spagnolo di nome Legazpi navigò verso oriente per stabilire relazioni commerciali permanenti con la Cina, all'epoca il paese più ricco e potente del mondo. A Manila, la città da lui fondata, l'argento delle Americhe, estratto da schiavi africani e indiani, veniva venduto agli asiatici in cambio di seta per i paesi europei. Per la prima volta, merci e persone di ogni angolo del globo erano coinvolte in un unico mercato mondiale, la base materiale dell¿età moderna. Con avventurose incursioni attraverso i continenti e lungo la linea del tempo, Mann ci mostra alcuni scenari cruciali di quella svolta epocale, dai quali emerge come la creazione di una rete universale di scambi ecologici ed economici abbia favorito l'ascesa dell'Europa, devastato la Cina imperiale e sconvolto l'Africa. Ma dove sono anche ben visibili le radici di alcune delle più scottanti questioni del nostro tempo, dall'immigrazione all'autodeterminazione dei popoli, dalla questione ambientale al cosiddetto «scontro di civiltà».
