Chéjov, para Raymond Carver «el mejor escritor de relatos de to-dos los tiempos», nunca llegaría a escribir una novela larga, quizá porque, como decía Nabokov, era «un velocista, no un corredor de fondo». O quizá porque, de hecho, inventó una nueva modalidad narrativa en la que la extensión no venía dictada por convenciones genéricas sino por la propia materia del relato. En estas Cinco novelas cortas que ha seleccionado y traducido Víctor Gallego, vemos en cualquier caso su maestría para captar el tiempo y reflejarlo narrativamente, sin otro calendario que el que marcan las propias acciones –e inacciones- de los personajes. Son todas ellas obras de madurez: «Una historia aburrida» (1989), «El duelo» (1891), «La sala número seis» (1892), «Relato de un desconocido» (1893) y «Tres años» (1895). El peculiar héroe chejoviano transita por estas historias debatiéndose entre la indiferencia y las ganas de vivir: a alguno le parece estar viviendo «una mentira o algo semejante a una mentira», otro se define sin tapujos como «un fenómeno negativo», pero al final una circunstancia, un segundo de inspiración o un accidente trivial los enfrenta a todos al «roce de la vida» y las consecuencias son enigmáticas. A su lado, un nutrido elenco de cretinos instruidos, locos proféticos, funcionarios irónicos, pobres diablos y pequeños déspotas... «Conócete a ti mismo» es un «excelente y útil consejo –dice el protagonista de una de estas piezas-. Lo malo es que a los antiguos no se les ocurrió enseñarnos la manera de ponerlo en práctica.»

Numerosos autores españoles tratan estos cambios en su obra literaria. En este trabajo examino cinco de ellas: Las edades de Lulú por Almudena Grandes, La pasión turca por Antonio Gala, Con Agatha en Estambul por Cristina Fernández Cubas, El vergel por Josefina Aldecoa y El asesino de los sueños por Concha Alós. Aunque estos autores en su novela reflejan tal emancipación también muestran a unas protagonistas atrapadas en su rol social de mujer. A pesar de sus numerosos intentos de escape - por la experimentación sexual, el viaje y el exotismo - las protagonistas nunca logran evadirse de su posición social y por consecuencia permanecen atrapadas en la imposibilidad existencial de la mujer.

The origins of the Spanish novel date back to the early picaresque novels and Don Quixote, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the history of the genre in Spain presents the reader with such iconic works as Galdós's Fortunata and Jacinta, Clarín's La Regenta, or Unamuno's Mist. A History of the Spanish Novel traces the developments of Spanish prose fiction in order to offer a comprehensive and detailed account of this important literary tradition. It opens with an introductory chapter that examines the evolution of the novel in Spain, with particular attention to the rise and emergence of the novel as a genre, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the bearing of Golden-Age fiction in later novelists of all periods.
