El presente trabajo se inscribe en las actuaciones promovidas por el Grupo de Trabajo de Educación del Consejo Estatal del Pueblo Gitano integrado por representantes de los movimientos asociativos gitanos, representantes de distintos Departamentos de la Administración General del Estado y expertos en la materia con el fin de abordar todo lo referente a la atención educativa a la población gitana. El Grupo de Trabajo se viene reuniendo para abordar los temas relativos a la educación, entre ellos el desarrollo de los objetivos que en materia educativa establece la Estrategia Nacional para la Inclusión Social de la Población Gitana 20122020. El presente estudio actualiza los datos sobre el tema en cuestión situando al lector primeramente en los antecedentes y estado de la cuestión, pasa a presentar el diseño de la investigación realizada con una aproximación tanto cuantitativa como cualitativa a la presencia de la cultura gitana en los libros de texto en un muestreo de 221 libros de diversas editoriales para las principales asignaturas tanto de primaria como de secundaria. Resultan interesantes las categorías utilizadas en el análisis cualitativo donde no se trata solo de constatar las presencias o ausencias de elementos de la cultura gitana sino que tipos de las mismas nos encontramos. El estudio incluye también unas Orientaciones para la elaboración de libros de texto, donde se detienen en el análisis de los currículos oficiales de varias comunidades autónomas con el fin de detectar la presencia explícita de algún elemento relacionado con la cultura gitana así como la constatación de importantes ausencias y, a su vez, las enormes posibilidades que las diferentes áreas y asignaturas ofrecen para relacionar sus contenidos con esta población. Este apartado se complementa con unas recomendaciones generales a editoriales y profesores y con una presentación de recursos bibliográficos, programáticos y de entidades sociales gitanas de gran utilidad para trabajar el tema.
