State building is an ongoing process that first defines legitimate citizenship and then generates citizens. Political analysts and social scientists now use the concept of citizenship as a lens for considering both the evolution of states and the development of their societies. In Citizenship as a Regime leading political scientists from Canada, Europe, and Latin America use insights from comparative politics, institutionalism, and political economy to understand and analyze the dynamics of contemporary policies and politics. This book celebrates Jane Jenson's work and many of her contributions to political science and the study of Canadian politics. Featuring Jenson's concept of "citizenship regime", the collected chapters consider its theoretical and methodological underpinning and presents new applications to various empirical contexts. Contributors present original research, critically assess the idea of a citizenship regime, and suggest ways to further develop Jane Jenson's notion of a "citizenship regime" as an analytical tool. The study of political behaviour in Canada has often focused largely on parties and voting; Citizen Politics seeks to expand that definition of political behaviour to encompass behaviouralsim as a method of inquiry, as well as a focus of inquiry which includes; political culture, public opinion, voting and elections, political participation, leaders and activists, and interest groups and social movements. In the past fifteen years since a Canadian political behaviour text was last published, the field has changed immensely, and this collection reflects these changes. Women are examined as independent political actors, the importance of the media to voting and elections is investigated; the uniqueness of immigrant and ethnic minority participation in Canadian politics is discussed, and new social movements are examined. Each section begins with an essay that synthesizes the important research and arguments that inform each subfield. These are followed by two or more essays of original, contemporary research which inform students of critical new approaches and provide examples of how research in the field of political behaviour is conducted. The Message of POWER SHIFT: Fed up with politics-as-usual? Most Canadians are. They (83%) want their MP to represent them and not a party in the House of Commons. Political parties, however, do not consider reforms that would shift significant power from them to citizens. Professor Lyon, breaking the party silence, speaks strongly in support of the interests of his fellow citizens.
