Italy in the Middle Ages was unique among the countries of Europe in recreating, in a changed environment, the urban civilization of antiquity - the society, culture, and political formations of city-states. This book examines the origins and nature of this phenomenon from the fall of Rome to the eve of its consummation, the Italian Renaissance. The explanation is sought in Italy's singular `double existence' between two contrasted worlds - ancient and medieval. The ancient was characterised by the total predominance of the landed aristocracy in economy and society, enforced through a peculiar system of city states embracing town and country. The new medieval influences were marked by the separation of town, country and aristocracy, by the identification of towns with trade and a mercantile bourgeoisie, and by commercial and proto-industrial revolution. Italy shared in both worlds. It remained a land of cities and of an urbanized ruling class (except in the Norman South) and re-established territorial city states; but the staes were very different from those of antiquity, the city leaders in the commercial revolution, and Italy itself seen as a nation of shopkeepers, birthplace of capitalism. In this fascinating and ground-breaking study, Philip Jones traces in detail the tension and interaction between the two traditions, civic and patrician, mercantile and bourgeois, through all phases of Italian life to their culmination in two rival regimes of communes and despots.

This volume traces the logic of urban political conflict in late medieval Europe's most heavily urbanized regions, Italy and the Southern Low Countries. The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries are often associated with the increasing consolidation of states, but at the same time they also saw high levels of political conflict and revolt in cities that themselves were a lasting heritage of this period. In often radically different ways, conflict constituted a crucial part of political life in the six cities studied for this book: Bologna, Florence, and Verona, as well as Liège, Lille, and Tournai. The Logic of Political Conflict in Medieval Cities argues that such conflicts, rather than subverting ordinary political life, were essential features of the political systems that developed in cities. Conflicts were embedded in a polycentric political order characterized by multiple political units and bases of organization, ranging from guilds to external agencies. In this multi-faceted and shifting context, late medieval city dwellers developed particular strategies of legitimating conflict, diverse modes of behaviour, and various forms of association through which conflict could be addressed. At the same time, different configurations of these political units gave rise to specific systems of conflict which varied from city to city. Across all these cities, conflict lay at the basis of a distinct form of political organization-and represents the nodal point around which this political and social history of cities is written.

In The Laws of Late Medieval Italy Mario Ascheri examines the features of the Italian legal world and explains why it should be regarded as a foundation for the future European continental system. The deep feuds among the Empire, the Churches unified by Roman papacy and the flourishing cities gave rise to very new legal ideas with the strong cooperation of the universities, beginning with that of Bologna. The teaching of Roman law and of the new papal laws, which quickly spread all over Europe, built up a professional group of lawyers and notaries which shaped the new, 'modern', public institutions, including efficient courts (like the Inquisition). Politically divided, Italy was partly unified by the legal system, so-called (Continental) common law (ius commune), which became a pattern for all of Europe onwards. Early modern Europe had for long time to work with it, and parts of it are still alive as a common cultural heritage behind a new European law system.

Premessa Da alcuni anni, nel mondo accademico, si è diffusa la prassi che quando un docente universitario termina il servizio, i suoi più stretti collaboratori, a sua “insaputa”, confezionino un’opera miscellanea come riconoscimento del percorso scientifico svolto. Non è il caso di questo libro. Paola Galetti, non seguendo la prassi in auge, ha deciso di regalarsi un volume nel quale invitare direttamente amici, colleghi e giovani ricercatori (molti formatisi proprio facendo il dottorato con Paola) che a vario titolo e in varie circostanze hanno condiviso con lei percorsi di ricerca comune. Proprio perché l’interesse era spostato dai contenuti alle persone, agli autori non è stato dato alcun tema specifico, ma si è lasciato liberi di rendere omaggio a Paola nel modo che preferivano. A seconda delle singole sensibilità personali sono stati confezionati contributi più vasti e articolati, rispetto ad altri più puntuali e specifici. In tutti però è emersa l’attenzione d’essere coerenti con gli specifici filoni di indagine che Paola ha portato avanti in questi decenni di insegnamento e studio presso l’Università di Bologna. Il risultato è stato un volume coerente, che è stato possibile articolare in quattro nodi tematici: la storia degli studi, Piacenza, la città e il territorio. L’arco cronologico spazia dall’età tardo antica ai secoli finali del Medioevo, mentre l’areale geografico, sebbene incentrato prevalentemente sull’Italia padana, raggiunge il centro e il sud della Penisola, aprendo finestre anche sull’Europa medievale: Spagna e Polonia. Un aspetto che emerge con forza nel volume e che ha sempre contraddistinto la produzione scientifica di Paola è senza dubbio l’interdisciplinarietà, così la partecipazione di storici, archeologi, ingegneri e storici dell’arte rende l’opera alquanto vivace e ricca di spunti di riflessione metodologica. In questa sede non è il caso di ripercorrere la carriera accademica e il percorso di ricerca di Paola Galetti, in quanto noti e ben chiari. Quello su cui vorrei soffermarmi è una breve nota personale. È per me stato un grande piacere avere l’onore di curare gli atti di questo volume. Con Paola e con il gruppo di ricerca della scuola di Vito Fumagalli (Bruno Andreolli, Massimo Montanari e Gianfranco Pasquali), in un ventennio di attività presso l’Università di Bologna ho avuto modo di crescere e formarmi come ricercatore e di portare avanti i miei autonomi filoni di studio. In questo percorso il ruolo di Paola è stato fondamentale, non solo attraverso gli insegnamenti avuti, ma anche per la grande correttezza e disponibilità dimostrata. Basti solo rilevare che tutte le ricerche sulla società piacentina altomedievale non sarebbero state possibili se Paola, senza remora alcuna, non avesse messo a disposizione la numerosa mole di dati che aveva raccolto e che solo in minima parte erano stati editi. Per queste e per altre mille ragioni non posso che esserle grato e ricordare sempre con grande affetto e piacere gli anni bolognesi di ricerche comuni. Chiudo questa breve premessa con dei doverosi ringraziamenti verso Mila Bondi, Mattia Cantatore e Marco Cavalazzi che a vario titolo mi hanno dato un grande aiuto nella fase di redazione del volume e nella revisione delle bozze. Infine un grande augurio a Paola che la sua uscita dai ranghi effettivi dell’Università coincida con un periodo di meritato riposo, dal quale attingere rinnovate energie per nuove e sempre stimolanti ricerche. Innumerevoli e indelebili sono i segni che il Medioevo ha impresso nel territorio del nostro Paese: singole architetture, civili o religiose che siano, spesso grandiose, così come interi centri storici. La ricostruzione, sia pure a grandi linee, di una geografia storica che si dispiega per più di un millennio, dalla caduta di Roma (476) alla scoperta dell’America (1492), consente di penetrare nel vivo di paesaggi culturali, la cui forma e struttura scaturiscono da un’intensa stratificazione di cause e avvenimenti che nei secoli si sono vicendevolmente intrecciati con l’ambiente naturale, conferendo di solito una particolare specificità a determinati contesti regionali, urbani, rurali.
