The second swaggering instalment of Fortunes of France, the first volume of which, The Brethren, took the UK by storm last year Montpellier in 1566-only fools walk the streets at night unarmed, while a profession of faith in the wrong company can lead to a knife in the back. Not even this proud city of philosophers is safe from the menaces that endanger the peace of France. The city militia are struggling to contend with the lawlessness and religious hatred that threaten to tear the whole country in two. Now an adult, Pierre de Siorac must travel south on dangerous roads to the great university town, accompanied by his strapping but naive brother Samson and the crafty Miroul. Well-armoured, with swords and pistols at their belts, the trio are confident of repelling any bandits who cross their path, but their new life away from the safety of their Perigord home will bring with it many new dangers and delights. Continuing the colourful story that began with The Brethren, City of Wisdom and Blood is the second book in the sweeping saga, Fortunes of France. Robert Merle (1908-2004) was born in French Algeria, before moving to mainland France in 1918. Originally an English teacher, Merle served as an interpreter with British Expeditionary Force during the Second World War, and was captured by the German army at Dunkirk, the experience of which served as the basis for his Goncourt-prize-winning Weekend at Zuydcoote. He published the 13 volumes of his hugely popular Fortunes of France series over four decades, from 1977 to 2003, the final volume appearing just a year before his death in 2004.

The third book in the swashbuckling Fortunes of France series - devious courtly intrigues build to a horrific and bloody climax in the most powerful instalment yet 1572: Returning from his studies in Montpellier, Pierre de Siorac is ambushed by a jealous PŽrigord nobleman. A duel ensues, and Pierre must subsequently travel to Paris, to seek his pardon from the King. The capital city and the royal court are a disorienting new environment for Pierre: a world of sweet words and fierce pride, where coquettish smiles hide behind fans, and murderous intents behind elegant bows; a world of genteel tennis matches and deadly swordplay, whose elaborate social graces mask a simmering tension that will soon explode to engulf the entire city in one of history's most infamous bouts of butchery - and signal the dawn of a new and bloody era in the history of France. Here, Pierre faces the greatest challenge of his young existence - to make his way through this deceptively dangerous milieu, to win a royal pardon, and finally to escape from Paris with his life, and the lives of his beloved companions, intact. The Brethren written by Robert Merle and has been published by Pushkin Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-03 with Fiction categories.

The first novel in the adventure-filled epic Fortunes of France, one of France's best-loved historical fiction series, now translated into English for the first time The Périgord of 16th century France is a wild region on the edge of the reaches of royal authority. To this beautiful but dangerous country come two veterans of the French king's wars, Jean de Siorac and Jean de Sauveterre, The Brethren-as fiercely loyal to the crown as they are to their Huguenot religion. They make their home in the formidable chateau of Mespech, and the community they found prospers. We meet the fiery Isabelle, mistress of the castle, refusing to renounce her religious beliefs despite great pressure; the petty and meal-mouthed Francois, unlikely heir to the estate; the brave and loyal Jonas who lives in a cave and keeps a wolf as a pet; the swaggering soldier Cabusse; and the outrageously superstitious Maligou, and Sarrazine, who once roamed as part of a wild gypsy band. But the country is descending into chaos, plagued by religious strife, famine, pestilence, bands of robbers... and, of course, the English. The Brethren must use all their wits to protect those they love from the chaos that threatens to sweep them away. A sprawling, earthy tale of violence and lust, love and death, political intrigue and dazzling philosophical debate, The Brethren is the first step in an engrossing saga to rival Dumas, Flashman and Game of Thrones.

These Straggling, Excited Groups Were Mainly Composed Of Men With Green Boughs In Their Hats And The Most Ludicrous Of Weapons In Their Hands. Some, It Is True, Shouldered Fowling Pieces, And Here And There A Sword Was Brandished; But More Of Them Were Armed With Clubs, And Most Of Them Trailed The Mammoth Pikes Fashioned Out Of Scythes, As Formidable To The Eye As They Were Clumsy To The Hand. There Were Weavers, Brewers, Carpenters, Smiths, Masons, Bricklayers, Cobblers, And Representatives Of Every Other Of The Trades Of Peace Among These Improvised Men Of War. High Dive written by Jonathan Lee and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-08 with Fiction categories.

**Named a Best Book of the Year by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle** “Devastating . . . Inspired . . . We make so many complex emotional investments in the lives of Lee’s characters that it takes a monk’s restraint not to flip to the very end of the book before you get there.” —Jennifer Senior, New York Times In September 1984, a bomb was planted at the Grand Hotel in the seaside town of Brighton, England, set to explode in twenty-four days when the British prime minister and her entire cabinet would be staying there. High Dive not only takes us inside this audacious assassination attempt—a decisive act of violence on the world stage—but also imagines its way into a group of unforgettable characters. Nimbly weaving together fact and fiction, comedy and tragedy, the story switches among the perspectives of Dan, a young IRA explosives expert; Moose, a former star athlete gone to seed, who is now the deputy hotel manager; and Freya, his teenage daughter, trying to decide what comes after high school. Over the course of a mere four weeks, as the prime minister’s arrival draws closer, each of their lives will be transformed forever. A bold, astonishingly intimate novel of laughter and heartbreak, High Dive is a moving portrait of clashing loyalties, guilt and regret, and how individuals become the grist of history.
