City Rooms: Made in Singapore is a primarily a collection of essays,photographs, and diagrams that I developed on the subject during a 10-month Fulbright grant in 2022. There is a lose structure and logic to how the essays are sequenced, but they don't have to be read in order. In fact, this doesn't have to be read at all, since much of the content is visual. But if you've read this far, you're one of the few bright stars in the universe who actually read the stuff on your shelves (and coffee tables). So here for you, a brief note of explanation as to how this is arranged. "1-Definition" is where I try to get my arms around what, exactly, a city room is. "2-Timeline" is where I document six city rooms in Singapore, these six being the six places that are explicitly defined as "city rooms" in existing literature or marketing materials. "3-Concept" explores the broader ideas around mixed-use, enclosed space in urban environments. The third section is probably the most nebulous, but for me it's the most interesting as it explores the broader manifestation of the concept. In this frame of mind, my great hope is that each of us become more adept at identifying city-room-like spaces in the urbanized world. Not merely to generalize but indeed *popularize* the concept; smuggling it straight into the popular lexicon: that is the ultimate aim of "City Rooms: Made in Singapore".
