Este es un libro sobre el uso público de la historia, o mejor, sobre el uso público de la ruina. La autora parte de la constatación de la situación actual de Roma donde imperan unos principios conservacionistas que remontan sus orígenes a una «religiosidad patrimonial» de la Italia fascista y que siguen aplicándose sin mayor discusión. Una situación en la que campa un uso público de la historia inconsciente, donde a pesar de un conservacionismo, hay pérdidas de patrimonio a diario. Las políticas patrimoniales y el urbanismo requieren de «intervenciones de adaptación y transformación en tiempos mucho más rápidos que los impuestos por la investigación arqueológica de campo». La solución a este desajuste temporal ha venido de la mano de las «técnicas de acumulación», guardamos los objetos y la documentación como una solución al olvido pero terminando irremediablemente por olvidarse.
