Political Postmodernisms shows how sites outside of Western Europe and North America undermine an established narrative of architecture theory and history. It focuses specifically on postmodern architecture, which is traditionally understood as embodying the flippant and apolitical aesthetics of capitalist affluence. By investigating postmodern architecture’s manifestations in the unlikely settings of Chile during the neoliberal dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet and Poland during the late socialist Polish People’s Republic, the book argues for a new account that incorporates the political roles it plays when seen in a global perspective. Political Postmodernisms has three goals. First, it challenges the familiar narrative regarding postmodern architecture as following the “cultural logic of late capitalism” (Fredric Jameson) or as a socially conservative project (Jürgen Habermas). Second, it fills in portions of Chilean and Polish architectural history that have been neglected by Chilean and Polish architectural historians themselves. Third, Political Postmodernisms shows how architecture can work as a political form – serving propagandistic purposes and functioning as part of oppositional projects. The book is projected to be of use to students and scholars in global modern and contemporary architecture history, history of urban planning, East European Studies, and Latin American Studies.

Entre líneas invita a la relectura de la historia, la arquitectura y la modernidad a través del aporte de las arquitectas en Chile desde su entrada a la universidad en los años veinte (los hombres lo hicieron en 1849). Inspira la capacidad de las jóvenes editoras para construir ‘mancomunidad’ con un extenso colectivo de personas e instituciones. Desde la epistemología feminista que marca la investigación, ningún conocimiento se desliga de quien lo estudia. Es en este tipo de iniciativas que reconozco cómo la universidad se deja interpelar por nosotras: estudiantes, profesoras y directoras o decanas ‘recién llegadas’ hace más de un siglo. También me anima ver cómo cada vez más hombres y organizaciones se suman a este camino de construcción de memoria con sentido de futuro. Entre líneas cuestiona la supuesta neutralidad de las disciplinas y el universal del ‘genio creador’: hombre en solitario, procedente de países desarrollados. Este libro habla sobre mujeres que irrumpieron en el panorama arquitectónico de Chile, pero permanecieron invisibles hasta tiempos muy recientes, muchas de ellas hasta esta investigación. Destaca cómo las arquitectas se vincularon de manera singular con el tiempo (la sociedad, las instituciones y familias) en que les tocó vivir. Sin duda, no es la igualdad de experiencias, sino de derechos, lo que buscamos. Ese eje primordial de la CEPAL se refiere a la plena titularidad de los derechos humanos como horizonte normativo y práctico para todas las personas, sin distinción, y a su inclusión en la dinámica del desarrollo de la sociedad. Por eso, esta publicación aporta a la historiografía de la arquitectura moderna, cuyo tiempo corresponde en la región, y en Chile, con una modernidad inconclusa reflejada en sociedades estructuralmente desiguales. Entre líneas produce una onda que requiere llegar a más colectivos académicos y sociales para construir una trama: redes de Iberoamérica que transformen el paisaje, la ciudad, las viviendas, la docencia, la investigación, la universidad y la sociedad para que cada persona pueda crecer en un mundo más sostenible e igualitario.
