This book offers an analysis of values in Hungary. Following the proposition that civic values are crucial to liberal democracy and conducive to international peace, this book examines the extent to which these values are respected and practised in a number of policy spheres, with chapters devoted to the political system, the media, religion, relations with the European Union, history textbooks, cinema, Roma, and the attitudes of Hungarian women voters. The book also charts how, under Prime Minister Orbán, Hungary has gravitated away from the civic values spelled out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Charter of the European Union. This book will prove to be of great use to scholars and students of democracy, East Central Europe, minorities, Hungarian contemporary history and politics, civic culture, gender studies, nationalism, human rights, and more broadly the social sciences.

This book considers the state of Czech democracy, following the rise of authoritarian regimes in Poland and Hungary and the ascent of billionaire oligarch Andrej Babiš to the office of prime minister of the Czech Republic, leading to concerns about conflict of interest. The authors argue that civic values, such as tolerance, respect for the equality of people, and readiness to play by the rules of the political game, are key factors in determining whether the Czech Republic will maintain its democracy in the coming years. The book employs a broad perspective, bringing together insights from political science, sociology, cultural studies, and other disciplines to analyse changes in the democracy of the Czech Republic since 1989, taking into consideration various dimensions of civic values, including politics, gender inequality, film, and the media.

East Central Europe Since 1989 written by Sabrina P. Ramet and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-12 with History categories.
This groundbreaking treatment of post-communist developments in East Central Europe examines politics, economics, media, religious institutions, transitional justice, gender inequality, and literature, highlighting the overt functions, latent functions, and side effects associated with each sphere. Communism in East Central Europe had cracks from the beginning, as uprisings in East Germany in 1953 and Hungary in 1956 demonstrated. But with the establishment of the Independent Trade Union Solidarity in Poland in the Summer of 1980, communism went into steady decline and, between 1988 and 1991, crumbled. What followed has been an unsteady transition to various forms of often corrupt pluralism with democracy doing best in the Czech Republic (with the exception of the years 2017–2021) and Slovenia, and worst in Hungary, Albania, Serbia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Drawing on the functionalist theory of Robert K. Merton, the authors examine what policymakers – communist and post-communist – were or are trying to accomplish, the intended and unintended results of these policies, and the side-effects they have produced. This volume will be of interest not only to specialists in East Central Europe but also to graduate and undergraduate students, members of the diplomatic corps, and general readers.

Narratives And Practices Of Migrant And Minority Incorporation In European Societies written by Zenia Hellgren and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-20 with Political Science categories.
This book explores the disjuncture that emerges at various levels in European diversity management policies and their translation into practice. It shows that state-wide strategies can only guide diversification outcomes, not wholly control them, and in practice, national level integration policies rely on multi-level involvement including authorities at regional or local levels and civil society organisations. The book demonstrates a complex and varied picture of the ways in which different European countries engage with ethnic diversity, as well as to the internal (in)consistency of the philosophical underpinnings of this engagement. As such, it draws attention not just to ways in which diversity "is done," but illuminates processes and narratives which are messy, contested, and contradictory. This book is of key interest to scholars, students, and practitioners involved in integration, ethnic and cultural diversity studies, migration and immigration, citizenship, ethnicity, and more broadly to European studies, and the wider social sciences.

Revolution Revisited Emmanuel Macron And The Limits Of Political Change In France written by Susan Collard and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-04 with Political Science categories.
This book provides timely assessment of the extent to which Emmanuel Macron’s declared presidential goal – to bring in radical transformation of French politics, indeed a revolution, albeit a democratic one – has been achieved. This analysis of his presidency provides a framework for reflection on ‘immobilism’ in French politics, and how enduring transformation has remained much more elusive to most of those who promised it. With a wide a range of underlying, seemingly intractable and unresolved structural issues dominating French society, the book asks whether the young ‘disrupter’ has succeeded in reforming France where others had failed. What can we learn about the processes of political change from analysing Macron’s successes and failures in working through his ambitions for France? This book will be of key interest to scholars, students and followers of French politics/studies and society, gender studies, media studies and more broadly European studies.

Democracy And Its Enemies In Europe written by Joanna Rak and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-11 with Political Science categories.
This book analyses the evolving nature of democratic threats and identifies strategies necessary to safeguard democratic governance in an increasingly turbulent political environment. It explores how democratic systems in Europe have faced, and continue to face, threats from various entities that exhibit essential characteristics of being enemies of democracy, including fascism, Nazism, authoritarianism, and modern forms of populism and external interference. Through detailed case studies, the book examines the tactics used by enemies of democracy to undermine the sovereignty of political nations, from the rise of totalitarian regimes in the twentieth century to contemporary challenges like Russia’s democratic decline and hybrid warfare tactics in Poland and Estonia. It also highlights how certain democracies have successfully resisted these threats, offering valuable lessons for protecting democratic values and institutions in today’s world. Going beyond historical analysis, the book provides a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding and categorising the enemies of democracy, transforming the concept from a normative idea into a powerful analytical tool. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European history and politics, political theory, democracy, political systems, political philosophy, and comparative politics.

This book offers a comprehensive and timely analysis of the parliamentary dimension of the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE) – an unprecedented experiment in which parliamentary representation met transnational citizen participation in the European Union (EU). Across twelve chapters, the book investigates the CoFoE as an opportunity structure for both the European Parliament (EP) as the “host” of the process, and national as well as regional parliaments, as the “guests” in this process, to fulfil and revitalise their key functions in EU multi-level democracy. The book also provides a valuable source of insights for representatives in national parliaments and the newly elected European Parliament (2024–2029), to hopefully prompt them to rethink their relationship with citizens in the ever-evolving transnational democratic space of the EU. Bringing together both academics and practitioners, this book will be of key interest to anyone interested in parliamentary representation, citizen participation, and democratic legitimacy in the EU and beyond.
