Semplici mattoni, tutti uguali, che una volta rotti possono essere sostituiti senza battere ciglio. Mattoni di un'utopia cieca e feroce, nel nome della quale si sprecano vite, si esercita quotidianamente la violenza e si esaltano egoismo e apparenza. Ma questo Ani e Bi lo hanno capito fin dal loro arrivo, molti anni prima. Entrambe, ancora adolescenti, sono state portate lì con la forza, come tante altre prima di loro, perché considerate elementi pericolosi per la società. Ormai cresciute e diventate l'una il punto fermo dell'altra, sono determinate a fuggire da quel luogo abominevole, che le donne le prende, le mastica e le sputa. Dentro di loro, ragazze diversissime, una che sorride poco e ragiona forse troppo, l'altra esuberante e sfacciata, ma di certo non stupida, si alimenta silenzioso un fuoco che attende solo di divampare e travolgere tutto il marcio che le circonda. Quando accadrà, il mondo che troveranno fuori sarà molto diverso da come si aspettano, deludente e sorprendente allo stesso tempo. Ma in quel mondo dovranno sforzarsi di costruire il loro posto, ricucire le ferite del passato, lottare per la libertà delle compagne ancora recluse insieme a chi, fuori dal Campo, ancora resiste, e abbracciare finalmente ciò che sono davvero.

Drawing on the recent renewal of interest in the debate on orality and literacy this book investigates the varying perceptions and representations of orality in contemporary Italian fiction, providing a fresh perspective on this rich and fast-developing debate and on the study of the Italian literary language. The book brings together a number of complementary approaches to orality from the fields of linguistics, literary and media studies and offers a detailed analysis of a broad variety of authors and texts that appeared over the last three decades - ranging from internationally acclaimed writers such as Celati, Duranti and Tabucchi, through De Luca and Baricco, to the latest generation of writers, such as Campo, Ballestra and Nove. By exploring the complementary facets of Italian orality, and its diachronical developments since the seventies, this study questions the traditionally dichotomic approach to the study of orality and literacy and posits a more flexible, cross-modal approach that accounts for the increasing hybridisation of text forms and media and for the greater interaction between the spoken and the written as well as their representations.
