John Griffith London (1876 – 1916), commonly known as Jack London, was an American journalist, social activist, and novelist. He was an early pioneer of commercial magazine fiction, becoming one of the first globally-famous celebrity writers who were able to earn a large amount of money from their writing. London is famous for his contributions to early science fiction and also notably belonged to "The Crowd", a literary group an Francisco known for its radical members and ideas. He was also a staunch supporter of socialism and workers rights, which are the main topics of this 1905 essay. Other notable works by this author include: “Martin Eden” (1909), “The Kempton-Wace Letters” (1903), and “The Call of the Wild” (1903). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

'War of the Classes' is a nonfiction novel written by Jack London, discussing socialism and its merits. London is mostly known for his fiction work, but he is also well-known for being a socialist. Neither a theorist nor an intellectual socialist, London's socialism grew out of his life experience. His views were influenced by his experience with people at the bottom of the social pit. His optimism and individualism faded, and he vowed never to do more hard physical work than necessary. He wrote that his individualism was hammered out of him, and he was politically reborn. He often closed his letters "Yours for the Revolution."

Dickens S Class Consciousness A Marginal View written by P. Morris and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

Dickens's social concern has always been recognized as important to his fiction, but this is the first study to focus specifically upon the representation of class consciousness in his novels. Dr Morris's detailed research on influential Victorian journals demonstrates the inherently dialogic quality of Dickens's writing - the continuous interaction between the language of his texts and the language of class articulated in the era. This re-articulation of the political contemporaneity of the novels reveals the marginal perspective they contain and offers new insight into the developing rhetorics of competitive individualism, class interpellation, and control of urban discontent.

'Englishness' is by no means the unchanging quality of those living in the territory that has come to be England, but a concept that has been made and remade throughout history, expressing itself through existing symbols and ideas. Since its first publication in 1987 this collection has been regarded as a major work on English national identity as it evolved during the period 1880-1920 and has had a significant impact on writing and research. It is a classic text for students of modern British history and courses in politics, sociology and literature. This updated edition of Englishness contains a new introduction by Robert Colls and Philip Dodd, which sets the work in the context of research done since its original publication, and an afterword by Will Self which relates it to current debates on Britain as a multinational state. This important collection contains ideas that are still pertinent today, making it essential reading for students and scholars alike.

Similarly, an entry on an individual novel discusses the importance of that novel not only form, analyzing the particular innovations that novel has introduced and the ways in which it has influenced the subsequent course of the genre. A wide range of topic entries explore the history, criticism, theory, production, dissemination and reception of the novel. "Jack London's adventure novels and stories made him one of America's most popular writers. Less known, however, is the role he played of social critic and spokesman for the oppressed. In this book, Philip S. Foner presents the career of the popular novelist with emphasis on his social ideas and activities. This biography is based on a careful analysis of London's novels, short stories, and essays, as well as his letters and interviews with him that appeared in the contemporary press. While pointing out London's contributions to the labor and Socialist movements of his day, it does not ignore the weaknesses and defects of his philosophy--in particular, his racist concepts. At the same time, it makes clear that these weaknesses did not totally destroy his effectiveness as a social critic. Jack London: American rebel draws an exciting and thought-provoking picture of the man and his times."--Page 4 of cover.
