Non hanno fatto nulla di male, non hanno commesso reati, eppure sono sospetti e per questo pericolosi. Quando e perché abbiamo iniziato ad avere paura degli ultimi? E che cosa è cambiato nei secoli? Le disuguaglianze economiche sono antiche quanto l'umanità e i poveri, purtroppo, sono sempre esistiti. Quello che è cambiato storicamente è il modo in cui gli ultimi sono stati considerati e trattati. Questo libro tesse le fila di una secolare vicenda che parte dagli albori dell'età moderna, quando per la prima volta il povero perde la concezione sacrale che aveva avuto nel Medioevo e diventa agli occhi dei gruppi dominanti colpevole del proprio stato. S'avvia un processo di criminalizzazione per cui accattoni, vagabondi, stranieri iniziano a essere percepiti come una minaccia. La società via via si trasforma sotto l'impulso di una borghesia che trionfa sulle altre classi sociali imponendo una nuova cultura e un diverso stile di vita, pretendendo il decoro delle città e dei comportamenti delle persone che le abitano, difendendo con ogni mezzo la proprietà e la sicurezza. L'idea che i poveri, e più di recente i contadini e gli operai, siano un pericolo sociale diventa pratica di governo, si trasforma in leggi, seleziona i soggetti che devono essere sorvegliati e, nel caso, messi al bando o rinchiusi lontano dal consesso civile. È una storia che dal Cinquecento arriva all'oggi, evidenziando linee di sconcertante continuità.

How did ideas about crime and criminals change in Europe from around 1750 to 1940? How did European states respond to these changes with the development of police and penal institutions? Clive Emsley addresses these questions using recent research on the history of crime and criminal justice in Europe. Exploring the subject chronologically, he addresses the forms of offending, the changing interpretations and understandings of that offending at both elite and popular levels, and how the emerging nation states of the period responded to criminal activity by the development of police forces and the refinement of forms of punishment. The book focuses on the comparative nature in which different states studied each other and their institutions, and the ways in which different reformers exchanged ideas and investigated policing and penal experiments in other countries. It also explores the theoretical issues underpinning recent research, emphasising that the changes in ideas on crime and criminals were neither linear nor circular, and demonstrating clearly that many ideas hailed as new by contemporary politicians and in current debate on crime and its 'solutions', have a very long and illustrious history.

Medardo Rosso (1858–1928) is one of the most original and influential figures in the history of modern art, and this book is the first historically substantiated critical account of his life and work. A History of Capitalist Transformation: A Critique of Liberal-Capitalist Reforms highlights how, since the recent financial crises, the expression ‘liberal reform’ has entered common parlance as an evocative image of austerity and economic malaise, especially for the working classes and a segment of the middle class. But what exactly does ‘liberal reform’ refer to? The research analyzes the historical origins of liberal-capitalist reformism using a critical approach, starting with the origins of the Industrial Revolution. The book demonstrates that the chief purpose of such reforms was to integrate semi-peripheral states into the capitalist world-economy by imposing, both directly and indirectly, the adoption of rules, institutions, attitudes, and procedures amenable to economic and political interests of capitalist élites and hegemonic states – Britain first, the United States later – between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries. As such, the reforms became an active tool used to promote social-economical-financial institutions, norms, and lifestyles typical of a liberal-capitalist economic order which locates some of its founding values in capital accumulation, profit-seeking, and social transformation.
