Excerpt from The Cavalier: An Historical Novel I remember quite well the time when long and minute descriptions of scenery, costume, armor, per sonal appearance - ay, and even character - were highly palatable to the reader. The exquisite pic tures afi'orded by the poems and romances of Sir Walter Scott were the delight of intelligent minds. Men felt in reading them as if they were gazing at the glorious handiwork of a Claude or Poussin; but we have changed all that; we hear from the lips of every little critic deep condemnations of long and wearisome descriptions; and every sort of stimulant, from blood and thunder to philosophical infidelity, is required to excite the public taste. Fifty thousand throats cut in one chapter, five or six thousand young ladies seduced by one villain, with a reasonable ad mixture of gambling, swindling, drinking, and lying, form the best sauce to any story that can be told, and although every now and then a work appears. Excerpt from The Cavalier Poets: Their Lives, Their Day, and Their Poetry Seldom has criticism been more false. Here the gruff old Doctor seized upon an idea found in Dry den's Discussion Concerning the Origin and Progress of Satire, where the father of English criticism declares that Dr. Donne, who in part founded this school of singers, affects the metaphysics, and perplexes the minds of the fair sex with nice speculations of philosophy when he should engage their hearts and entertain them with the softness of love. Thereupon the cock-sure Samuel ex ploited this undoubted defect of Donne and his fol lowers as a salient characteristic, and stretched the name metaphysical until it covered nearly all the poets of the earlier seventeenth century who failed to lean toward the Dryden style of poetry. Excerpt from The Puritan and the Cavalier As there was no force in the making of the Republic there can be none in maintaining it. Could laws be enforced, there should be no need of courts and penalties; and punishments for violation. There should be no need of Jails and Penitentiaries, but where then should be our Liberty of law? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Cavalier in America The twin sponsors of American colonization were two cavaliers during the days of Queen Elizabeth - Sir Humphrey Gilbert and his half-brother, Sir Walter Raleigh. They conceived the idea, that to destroy the superiority of Spain, England must plant a colony in the New World. Accordingly the former obtained a patent of colonization in 1678, and attempted to establish a settlement in the neighborhood of Newfoundland. The attempt proved futile, and in the effort the noble Gilbert was drowned in the waves of the angry ocean. His last words will ever be kept in precious remembrance: "We are as near heaven by sea as by land." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Cavalier to His Lady: Love-Poems of the 17th Century It will be seen that I have not gone far afield in my gleaning; most of the now famous Elizabethan Lyrics are here, and if I have omitted any such (as certain of Shakespeare's, for instance) it was for lack neither of due consideration nor of appreciation, but because they were adjudged either over-familiar, or outside my time-limit (however elastic and arbitrary), or otherwise inconvenient to my scheme. To many readers well acquainted with the majority of these poems, some, I think, will be new - such as Sedley's Love still has something of the sea and his Phillis is my only joy, wherein the first line of the one should captivate the fancy, and the first line of the other strike familiarly on the ear. At the Worst I must put forward the anthologist's ultimate defence, that I put them in because I like them. A lesser apology will, I h0pe, be required for Wither's sonnet, Now gentle sleep hath closed up those eyes, despite its apparent derivation from the least translatable carmen of Catullus. To the end of Ben Jonson's See the chariot at hand here of love, I have attached Suckling's parody, Hast thou seen the down in the air, which possesses merits quite different from those of its original. A collocation of perhaps greater interest is that of Jonson's song. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Spanish Cavalier: A Story of Seville De Aguilera is not wont to make such blunders, said Lucius, who had sympathy for his fellow-clerk, partly arising from a belief that their Circumstances were somewhat the same - that the proud Spaniard had been, like himself, driven by necessity to work under one who, by birth and education, belonged to a sphere much lower than their own. I thought, continued Lepine, that De Aguilera looked very ill. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Henry Bourland: The Passing of the Cavalier A quarter of a century has passed since the Civil War, and the era of reconciliation has come with the new generation and the judgments of impartial historians. This book is an endeavor by one bred in the North to write sympathetically the annals of a Virginia family, and to show how, amid the conditions following the war, it was impossible for the wealthy planters to recover their status upon the old basis. In its broader aspect the story is a symbol of the extinction of the Southern aristocracy and their ideals and traditions as social forces. The scene is localized in Virginia, but the events give a composite picture of what took place in the South at large during the years of the Reconstruction. In one sense the narrative is fiction; but in another and truer sense, for most of the incidents have warrant in fact, it is a history of general conditions turned into the concrete. Other books have been written on this subject; but no Northern writer of fiction, so far as I know, has gone out of his own environment and has taken up the case of the Southerners for the purpose of learning and writing absolutely from their point of view.
