There is considerable discontent among the crew, many of whom are anxious to get back home to be in time for the herring season, when labour always commands a high price upon the Scotch coast. As yet their displeasure is only signified by sullen countenances and black looks, but I heard from the second mate this afternoon that they contemplated sending a deputation to the Captain to explain their grievance. I much doubt how he will receive it, as he is a man of fierce temper, and very sensitive about anything approaching to an infringement of his rights. I shall venture after dinner to say a few words to him upon the subject. I have always found that he will tolerate from me what he would resent from any other member of the crew. Amsterdam Island, at the north-west corner of Spitzbergen, is visible upon our starboard quarter—a rugged line of volcanic rocks, intersected by white seams, which represent glaciers. It is curious to think that at the present moment there is probably no human being nearer to us than the Danish settlements in the south of Greenland—a good nine hundred miles as the crow flies. A captain takes a great responsibility upon himself when he risks his vessel under such circumstances. One word before we proceed with our story, or our chronicle rather, as every word of it is based upon fact. The colonial trooper of fifteen or twenty years ago was a very different man from his representative of to-day. Not that I would imply any slur upon the courage of the latter; but for reckless dare-devilry and knight-errantry the old constabulary has never been equalled. The reason is a simple one. Men of gentle blood, younger sons and wild rakes who had outrun the constable, were sent off to Australia with some wild idea of making their fortunes. On arriving they found Melbourne by no means the El Dorado they expected; they were unfit for any employment, their money was soon dissipated, and they unerringly gravitated into the mounted police. Thus a sort of colonial "Maison Rouge" became formed, where the lowest private had as much pride of birth and education as his officers. They were men who might have swayed the fate of empires, yet who squandered away their lives in many a lone wild fight with native and bushranger, where nothing but a mouldering blue-ragged skeleton was left to tell the tale. 작품명 블루만스다이크의 협곡(The Gully of Bluemansdyke)는 황금을 찾아 헤매는 탐광업자들이 밀집한 어딘가를 뜻하는 가상의 지명입니다. Some of our readers may recall the Lena Valley murders, in which he figured as the[Pg 113] principal criminal. It is conjectured that, during the seven months that he owned a bar in that region, from twenty to thirty travellers were hocussed and made away with. He succeeded, however, in evading the vigilance of the officers of the law, and allied himself with the bushrangers of Bluemansdyke, whose heroic capture and subsequent execution are matters of history. Maloney extricated himself from the fate which awaited him by turning Queen's evidence. He afterwards visited Europe, but returned to West Australia, where he has long played a prominent part in local matters. On Friday evening he encountered an old enemy, Thomas Grimthorpe, commonly known as Tattooed Tom of Hawkesbury. Shots were exchanged, and both men were badly wounded, only surviving a few minutes. Mr. Maloney had the reputation of being, not only the most wholesale murderer that ever lived, but also of having a finish and attention to detail in matters of evidence which has been unapproached by any European criminal. Stooping over, I seized her as she swept by me, and with an effort lifted her, all sodden with water, into the boat. There was no need to row back, for the next billow carried us in and threw us upon the beach. I dragged the boat out of danger, and then lifting up the woman I carried her to the house, followed by my housekeeper, loud with congratulation and praise. 소설의 히로인답게 그녀는 무척이나 아름다웠고 맥티비는 자연스럽게 그녀에게 호감을 갖게 됩니다. 영어가 통하지 않는 그녀에게서 알 수 있는 것은 이름, 소피 라무진(Sophie Ramusine) 뿐이였죠. When I came back from my walk the woman was waiting at the door for me. I began to wish when I saw her that I had never saved her, for here was an end of my privacy. She was very young—at the most nineteen, with a pale somewhat refined face, yellow hair, merry blue eyes, and shining teeth. I followed as rapidly as I could, furious at this threatened invasion, but long before I reached the house he had disappeared through the open door. I heard a great scream from the inside, and as I came nearer the sound of a man's bass voice speaking rapidly and loudly. When I looked in, the girl, Sophie Ramusine, was crouching in a corner, cowering away, with fear and loathing expressed on her averted face and in every line of her shrinking form. The other, with his dark eyes flashing, and his outstretched hands quivering with emotion, was pouring forth a torrent of passionate pleading words. He made a step forward to her as I entered, but she writhed still further away, and uttered a sharp cry like that of a rabbit when the weasel has him by the throat. 아뿔싸! 그는 소피 라무진(Sophie Ramusine)의 가족이나 일행이 아니라, 그녀에게 반해 그녀를 납치해 배에 태운 납치범이였던 것!! 맥비티는 일단 그를 집에서 쫓아냈지만, 그는 그와 그의 집 주변을 끊임없이 맴돌았습니다. 결국 그가 잠시 외출한 사이 오르가네프(Ourganeff)는 다시 한 번 소피 라무진(Sophie Ramusine)을 납치합니다!! 러시아에 이어 스코틀랜드에서 납치 행각을 벌인 오르가네프(Ourganeff)는 맥비티의 보트마저 훔쳐 그녀를 태워 달아났습니다. 러시아에서 온 납치범과 피해자의 운명은 과연 어떻게 되었을까요?! I was too late. By the time I reached the water's edge he was a hundred yards away, making the boat spring with every stroke of his powerful arms. I uttered a wild cry of impotent anger, and stamped up and down the sands like a maniac. He turned and saw me. Rising from his seat he made me a graceful bow, and waved his hand to me. It was not a triumphant or a derisive gesture. Even my furious and distempered mind recognised it as being a solemn and courteous leave-taking. B 코난 도일이 창조한 코믹한 영웅(comedic hero) 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard)의 모험! : 코난 도일이 1894년부터 1903년까지 스트랜드 매거진(Strand Magazine)에 연재한 제라드 준장의 이야기는 제라르 준장의 회상(The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1896)과 제라르의 모험(The Adventures of Gerard by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1903)으로 나눠 단행본 출간되었습니다. 이후에도 그의 여정은 멈추지 않았고, 1910년 출간된 제라르 준장의 결혼(The Marriage of the Brigadier)(1910)을 끝으로 마무리되었습니다. 1894년부터 1910년까지 이십여 년에 걸쳐 연재된 시리즈이니만큼 주인공 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard)에 대해서도 독자들의 관심이 뜨거울 수 밖에 없었습니다. 그는 1780년대 가스코니(Gascony)에서 태어나 참베란의 후사르(the Hussars of Chamberan)에서 중위(a lieutenant)와 하급 대위(junior captain)로 복무하였습니다. 이듬해 이탈리아 마렝고(Marengo in Italy)에서 첫 전투를 경험한 후 콘플란스 후사르(the 3rd Hussars of Conflans)로 근무처를 옮깁니다. 1810년 후사르 대령(colonel of the 2nd Hussars)으로 승진한 후 이탈리아는 물론 프랑스, 폴란드, 스페인, 포르투갈, 독일과 러시아까지 서유럽 전역과 유라시아 대륙에서 활약하였습니다. 그리고 군인으로써 최고의 영예인 레지옹 도뇌르 그랑크로스(Grand-Cross of the Légion d'honneur)를 나폴레옹 황제로부터 수여받습니다!! 은퇴한 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard)은 파리에 머물며 한가로운 은퇴생활을 누리고 있으며, 공식적인 결혼은 치루지 않았습니다. 다작과 속작으로 유명한 코난 도일의 작품답게 세부적인 오류가 적지 않다는 단점이 있으나, 작가조차 미처 몰랐을 설정 오류를 찾는 것 또한 코난 도일의 작품을 즐기는 하나의 방법일 것입니다. 국내에는 거의 알려져 있진 않으나, 제라르 사가(The Gerard Saga)는 1915년 무성 영화 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard), 프랑스 영화 Undramous Napoléon, 더 파이팅 이글(The Fighting Eagle)(1927), 제라르의 모험(The Adventures of Gerard)(1970) 등의 영화를 비롯해 1954년과 2007년 BBC 라디오 드라마로 제작되었습니다. 대부분 유튜브에서도 찾아보기 어려운 고전명작이네요. 제라드의 모험(The Adventures of Gerard by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1903)은 아서 코난 도일이 1902년 8월부터 1903년 5월까지 영국 잡지 스트랜드 매거진(The Strand Magazine)에 연재한 단편을 모아 9월 22일 출간한 단편집입니다. George Newnes Ltd. 출판사에서 출간하였으며 8편의 단편을 만나실 수 있습니다. 수많은 제라르 사가(The Gerard Saga) 중 유럽의 독자들에게 가장 친숙한 작품으로 꼽을 수 있는 이유는 1970년 어드벤처 코미디 영화(adventure comedy film)로 제작되었기 때문입니다. 1915년 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard), 1927년 파이팅 이글(The Fighting Eagle)과 함께 제라르 사가(The Gerard Saga)를 원작으로 제작된 영화 중 가장 마지막 작품입니다. 작품에 출연한 여배우 클라우디아 카디날레(Claude Joséphine Rose " Claudia " Cardinale)는 튀니지 출신으로 이탈리아와 프랑스를 비롯해 할리우드까지 왕성하게 활동한 당대의 미녀배우입니다. 영화에서는 제라르 준장(Brigadier Gerard)이 자신의 용맹함을 뽐내는 상대방 여주인공으로 등장하지요. 나폴레옹에 매료된 역사 소설 작가((historical novel writer), 아서 코난 도일 : 작가 아서 코난 도일은 서문(Preface)에서 이 작품을 쓰기 위해 참조한 나폴레옹 시대를 다룬 다양한 작품과 저자를 소개하고 있습니다. 독자들에게 자신이 나폴레옹과 당대에 매료된 - 추리 소설 작가가 아니라 역사 소설 작가라는 점을 강조함과 동시에 그만큼 다양한 자료를 섭렵하였다는 것을 은근히 과시하는 대목이라고 할 수 있겠습니다. Thus De Rocca, in his "Mémoires sur la Guerre des Francais en Espagne," has given the narrative of a Hussar, while De Naylies, in his "Mémoires sur la Guerre d'Espagne," gives the same campaigns from the point of view of the Dragoon. Then we have the "Souvenirs Militaires du Colonel de Gonneville," which treat a series of wars, including that of Spain, as seen from under the steel-brimmed, hair-crested helmet of a Cuirassier. Pre-eminent among all these works, and among all military memoirs, are the famous reminiscences of Marbot, which can be obtained in an English form. Marbot was a Chasseur, so again we obtain the Cavalry point of view. Among other books which help one to an understanding of the Napoleonic soldier, I would specially recommend "Les Cahiers du Capitaine Coignet," which treat the wars from the point of view of the private of the Guards, and "Les Mémoires du Sergeant Bourgoyne," who was a non-commissioned officer in the same corps. They were remarkable men these body-servants of the Press; two of them already veterans in camps, the other setting out upon his first campaign, and full of deference for his famous comrades. The third man was Anerley, of the Gazette—young, inexperienced, and rather simple-looking. He had a droop of the lip, which some of his more intimate friends regarded as a libel upon his character, and his eyes were so slow and so sleepy that they suggested an affectation. A leaning towards soldiering had sent him twice to autumn manoeuvres, and a touch of colour in his descriptions had induced the proprietors of the Gazette to give him a trial as a war-special. 코난 도일이 ‘의사 출신의 작가’로, 자신이 운영하는 안과에 손님이 없자 글을 쓰기 시작해 유명해 졌다는 것은 익히 잘 알려진 사실입니다. 그는 조지 터너바인 버드(George Turnavine Budd)와 영국 서남부 플리머스(Plymouth)에서 처음으로 개업하였다가 곧 접고, 1881년 영국 남부의 항구도시 포츠머스(Portsmouth)에서 개업하였습니다. 코난 도일은 포츠머스에서 셜록 홈즈의 첫 번째 작품 주홍색 연구(A Study in Scarlet)(1887)를 집필하였고, 첫 번째 아내와 결혼하였죠. 이후에는 런던으로 옮겨 간판 뿐인 병원과 함께 본격적으로 작품 활동을 시작합니다. 즉 코난 도일은 작가이기 이전에 의사였고, 런던에서 비로소 전업 작가가 된 셈입니다. 그렇다면 의사로써의 경험을 자신의 작품에 한번쯤 담아 보고 싶지 않았을까요? 스타크 먼로의 편지(The Stark Munro Letters by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1895)는 바로 이에 대한 답변입니다. 코난 도일은 의대를 졸업한 스타크 먼로(J.
